This is the last amaryllis in round two from the bulbs I purchased last year. The next batch will be ready in another month or so. This is Santiago and it has a lovely, light fragrance of berries and currants.

Some more January joy from the Amaryllis wing of the house: Candy Floss.

A direct view of a pink-blooming amaryllis with deep pink and white veins and a light green center. Petals of additional blooms can be seen in the background. Next up from the 2022 Amaryllis selection is: SAMBA. I've grown this one before and I always love coming back to it.

Close-up view of the center of Amaryllis Samba, which is a rich coral-red with white edging. The bloom is a semi-double and has ruffled edges in the interior. There is a white glass-paned door reflecting light in the background. A tabletop full of amaryllis in white and red pots, with the red and white Samba being the front and center bloom. There are several tall stalks full of buds and blooms, just on the verge of popping. The planters are topped with moss.

Crocus pot reveal! Crocus vernus 'Jeanne d'Arc' will be out soon: pure white, cup-like flowers with a bright orange pistil.

The crocus pots are reproductions of the Mildred R. Mottahedeh pot donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1983.

Two blue and white crocus pots, with bulbs beginning to appear through the holes. Adjacent to the bowls are three stone poems which read "More than anything I must have flowers, always, and always" which is a quote from Monet. There is a cluster of green moss in the upper left corner.

It's lenten rose season and you know what that means.... time to float them in the bird bath. It's like having rubies and diamonds and pearls floating in your own little ocean.

One of my favorite amaryllis blooming now: 'Amadeus Candy': huge, puffy white clouds edged in pink. Just what the doctor ordered.

On the downhill side now, but Camellia x vernalis Christmas Carol is a pretty site from October through December. Dark pink blooms with white margins appear on semi-weeping branches, making it a lovely candidate for a container garden. Because it’s a cross between C. sasanqua and C. japonica, it takes the best traits from both worlds and can better tolerate our southern temperature swings, especially through fall and winter.

First round of the amaryllis is at its peak now. Bogota is the tallest amaryllis I think I've ever grown, topping out at 44". It is shown here with Magnum, a dark red beauty with a white blush on the tips of the petals.

January is usually my down season, so I'm home a lot more working on designs. That means January is more likely the month I'll have flowers blooming on the kitchen table, whether they are Amaryllis or floral arrangements, or winter-interest plants from the garden.

An Aechmea, one of the easiest plants to enjoy indoors if you live in a colder climate. Another bloom that lasts for weeks.

I, for one, need flowers in January.

A frilly pink bloom with a starburst appearance. The foliage is silvery-gray and strap-like and surrounds the pink bloom. Sunlight is coming in through the window and makes the flower appear almost fluorescent.

Updated/edited to correct the botanical name. Thank you @louisffourie for pointing this out.

Another January bloomer, Protea nerifolia, is a native of South Africa, photographed at UC Santa Cruz Arboretum. Those lovely, feathery-red bracts are often mistaken for flowers, but after the bracts fall away, a cone remains at the tip of the stem.

Feathery-red bracts with dark purple tips surround a cone in what appears to be a flower, but after the bracts fall away, only a cone remains at the tip of the stem. The cone sits in the center of the bracts.

Erica canaliculata (Channelled Heath, Christmas Heather), a native to South Africa, at the UC Santa Cruz Arboretum, has thousands of cup-shaped, pink flowers in January. The species name "canaliculta" is Latin for "channeled" which refers to the grooves in older stems.

Thousands of tiny, cup-shaped pink flowers appear in January, giving the plant a fluffy, cloud-like appearance when in full bloom.

I’ll be combining two hashtags, #JanuaryJoy, for photos/artwork of flowers and #ArtJanuaryCalendar, for sharing of artwork this month. I used to be very crafty and creative, so I’ll post some older work, while trying to create new, in the hopes of re-igniting my creativity. From a few years ago, some #AlteredRolodexCards that feature flowers in the design.

Amaryllis 'Magnum' is a new one for me this year, but what a stunning, deep, dark beauty. Probably the nicest red amaryllis I've ever grown.

Two pots of dark red amaryllis on long green stalks. There are still some buds on these, as they haven't come into full bloom yet. In the background are bare winter trees.A closer view of the dark red Magnum amaryllis, with bare trees and blue sky in the background. This shade of scarlet red is absolutely breath-taking. It's the same color as a red cardinal.
