It's time to save #whales again
July 22, House #NaturalResources #subcommittee, GOP Rep. #NickBegich (AK) introduced draft legislation that would scale back #MarineMammal Protection Act. Among other things, it would limit ability of #US gov to take action against “incidental take,” killing of whales, #dolphins and #seals by sonic blasts from #oil exploration, ship and boat strikes or by drowning as accidental catch (#bycatch) in #fishing gear.

⟦Feyrer et al.⟧ Three decades of observer records reveal ongoing risks of marine mammal depredation and entanglement in Canada’s Atlantic fisheries academic.oup.com/icesjms/artic 🐋 #Cetaceans #MarineMammals #MarineLife #MarineBiology #Whales #Science #Dolphins #Porpoises #Bycatch

Use of immersion sensors on the legs of albatrosses revealed a behavior unique to foraging while following fishing vessels: the birds land on the water to prey on discarded fishing waste. This increases the risk of the birds becoming bycatch.

Journal of Fish Biology Associate Editor, and winner of the Huntingford Medal, Sofia Graça Aranha, now talks to us about deep water #sharks and their vulnerability to #trawling in #DeepSea #fisheries. Sofia sampled 10 trips of a crustacean trawler. 18 species of shark were found as #bycatch and 1559 individuals. 95% were either dead or dying. Through modelling, some really important properties of the most deadly trawls to deep sea shark were found #FSBI2025
