A hand-coloured lithograph, showing an idealised and youthful Lord Byron amid a jumble of rocks, streams, hills, and trees, and wearing a Highland costume as imagined by someone who has obviously only ever overheard a description of one, in passing: our boy is wearing a cap with two eagle feathers, a chequered neck-cloth, a plaid sash, a brightly coloured yellow, red and green kilt that is much too short, ending well above the knee. This is all accessorised with a ridiculously outsized furry ermine sporran, tartan socks, and little buckled pumps. He holds aloft a (? toy) bugle in his right hand and cradles a shotgun in his left, while looking off into the middle distance to our left. A dead (? or bored) stag lies at his feet and a hunting dog stands beside him. The dog looks frankly disgusted with the whole affair.

“Like Burns, Byron knew how earthy values crossed social strata. But by Byron’s time, polite society was even more thoroughly committed to grinding down public festivities in fairs, sports and open air gatherings. Byron was a shock for polite, well-educated readers. He horrified his public.”

Away, ye gay landscapes, ye gardens of roses!
In you let the minions of luxury rove,
Restore me the rocks where the snowflake reposes,
Though still they are sacred to freedom and love:
Yet, Caledonia, beloved are thy mountains,
Round their white summits though elements war;
Though cataracts foam ’stead of smooth-flowing fountains,
I sigh for the valley of dark Loch na Garr.

Lachin Y Gair (Dark Loch na Garr)
George Gordon, Lord Byron

Away, ye gay landscapes, ye gardens of roses!
In you let the minions of luxury rove,
Restore me the rocks where the snowflake reposes,
Though still they are sacred to freedom and love:
Yet, Caledonia, beloved are thy mountains,
Round their white summits though elements war;
Though cataracts foam ’stead of smooth-flowing fountains,
I sigh for the valley of dark Loch na Garr.

Ah! there my young footsteps in infancy wandered,
My cap was the bonnet, my cloak was the plaid;
On chieftains long perished my memory pondered
As daily I strode through the pine-covered glade;
I sought not my home till the day’s dying glory
Gave place to the rays of the bright polar star;
For fancy was cheered by traditional story
Disclosed by the natives of dark Loch na Garr.

“Shades of the dead! Have I not heard your voices
Rise on the night-rolling breath of the gale?”
Surely the soul of the hero rejoices,
And rides on the wind o’er his own Highland vale.Round Loch na Garr while the stormy mist gathers,
Winter presides in his cold icy car:
Clouds there encircle the forms of my fathers;
They dwell in the tempests of dark Loch na Garr.

“Ill-starred, though brave, did no visions foreboding
Tell you that fate had forsaken your cause?”
Ah! were you destined to die at Culloden,
Victory crown’d not your fall with applause:
Still were you happy in death’s earthy slumber,
You rest with your clan in the caves of Braemar;
The pibroch resounds, to the piper’s loud number,
Your deeds on the echoes of dark Loch na Garr.

Years have rolled on, Loch na Garr, since I left you,
Years must elapse ere I tread you again:
Nature of verdure and flowers has bereft you,
Yet still are you dearer than Albion’s plain.
England! thy beauties are tame and domestic
To one who has roved on the mountains afar:
Oh for the crags that are wild and majestic!
The steep frowning glories of dark Loch na Garr!

Byron declared that he was “half a Scot by birth, and bred / A whole one”. To what extent should we privilege such a claim? In what ways did Byron engage with a Scottish poetic heritage, if at all?

But I am half a Scot by birth, and bred
A whole one, and my heart flies to my head,—

from “Don Juan”, Canto X
George Gordon Byron

And all our little feuds, at least all mine,
Dear Jefferson, once my most redoubted foe
(As far as rhyme and criticism combine
To make such puppets of us things below),
Are over: Here's a health to 'Auld Lang Syne!'
I do not know you, and may never know
Your face—but you have acted on the whole
Most nobly, and I own it from my soul.

And when I use the phrase of 'Auld Lang Syne!'
'Tis not address'd to you—the more's the pity
For me, for I would rather take my wine
With you, than aught (save Scott) in your proud city.
But somehow,—it may seem a schoolboy's whine,
And yet I seek not to be grand nor witty,
But I am half a Scot by birth, and bred
A whole one, and my heart flies to my head,—

As 'Auld Lang Syne' brings Scotland, one and all,
Scotch plaids, Scotch snoods, the blue hills, and clear streams,
The Dee, the Don, Balgounie's brig's black wall,
All my boy feelings, all my gentler dreams
Of what I then dreamt, clothed in their own pall,
Like Banquo's offspring;—floating past me seems
My childhood in this childishness of mine:
I care not—'t is a glimpse of 'Auld Lang Syne.'

And though, as you remember, in a fit
Of wrath and rhyme, when juvenile and curly,
I rail'd at Scots to show my wrath and wit,
Which must be own'd was sensitive and surly,
Yet 'tis in vain such sallies to permit,
They cannot quench young feelings fresh and early:
I 'scotch'd not kill'd' the Scotchman in my blood,
And love the land of 'mountain and of flood.'

Ah ! À toute époque, ce maudit besoin de héros !

Lord Byron, Don Juan, Chant I (1819)
Texte original (anglais)
I want a hero: an uncommon want,
When every year and month sends forth a new one,
Till, after cloying the gazettes with cant,
The age discovers he is not the true one;
Of such as these I should not care to vaunt [...]

Take books along this summer [1966].
1 print : color ; sheet 21 x 56 cm (poster format)

#European #Byron #NewYorkTimes #posters #american #photopgraphy #LibraryOfCongress

loc.gov/pictures/item/20156478

This image features a vibrant and colorful illustration with the central figure of a person, presumably from historical times given their attire. This individual is depicted in profile view, wearing what appears to be an old-fashioned outfit complete with ruffled collar and puffed sleeves, indicative perhaps of European fashion several centuries past.

The character's facial expression seems focused or contemplative as they hold a large feather quill over open books, suggesting the act of writing. The background elements include two birds – one in pink tones on the left side actively pecking at an inkwell and another with orange hues positioned to the right near what appears to be classical architecture.

The color palette is striking, with strong contrasts between reds, blues, oranges, and yellows against a beige backdrop. The overall composition evokes themes of literature or academia, possibly targeting readers or educators as part of its message.

Text on the poster includes an inspirational quote by Lord Byron: "Eternal summer gilds them yet," followed by an encouragement to take books along during this season - "Take books along this summer." This suggests a promotional piece intended for summertime reading. The text is prominently displayed in bold, capitalized letters against the lighter background.

Impressively good. The little electric railway across Bay, the town, in New South Wales is described as working on quite small batteries. Basically car components repurposed. Short run, and level, of course.
