The First Casualty

They told you Iran's missiles were being swatted from the sky. They told you the Iron Dome was holding, the Patriot batteries were working, US and Israeli air power was surgical and winning. They told you this on the ABC. They told you this on Sky. They were telling you nonsense. MIT Professor Ted Postol — the man who proved the Patriot missile failed in the Gulf War while presidents were claiming a 97 percent success rate — has now established that current intercept rates against Iranian missiles run at a few percent at most. The systems are depleting. The decoys are multiplying. The official story is, in his own carefully chosen word, a fraud. The first casualty of war is truth. But the deeper insight, the one Phillip Knightley identified fifty years ago, is that the lies are not random. They serve purposes. And right now, they are serving purposes that Australians have every right to examine.

A cracked mirror lying in ash and rubble reflects a distorted television news broadcast showing a Middle East map and missile imagery, surrounded by torn newspaper pages and a broken press camera, symbolising the destruction of journalistic truth in wartime.

„Of the 129 journalists killed around the world in 2025, the Israeli military was responsible for 86, about two-thirds of the deaths, the found. The is the highest since the New York-based press freedom group started tracking the killing of journalists in 1992.“

On this platform:
"Israel Responsible for Two-Thirds of Record Journalist Killings in 2025: ."

But no one puts it in a context:

2026-02-25

‘A record 129 journalists and media workers were killed in the course of their work in 2025, and two-thirds of them were killed by #Israel the Committee to Protect Journalists (#CPJ) has said.

It was the second straight year that killings set a record and the second straight year that Israel was responsible for two-thirds of them’

The wholesale slaughter of the #Press in #Gaza is unprecedented. Israel is deliberately silencing news on the #genocide it perpetrated.

[…] "We returned from hell."

Imad Ifranji, Palestinian journalist detained in #SdeTeiman.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (#CPJ) report reveals systematic torture, sexual violence, and abuse against 58 out of 59 Palestinian journalists detained in Israeli prisons since October 7, 2023.

Note on terminology: the report’s terminology reflects international law and human rights standards, while mainstream/pro-Israel media often: normalizes abuses through neutral language, centers Israeli denials without scrutinizing evidence (e.g., #IDF statements treated as fact) and almost always erases #Palestinian testimonies by prioritizing "both sides" framing in asymmetrical power dynamics.

#CPJ Report: Israel Imprisons 29 Palestinian Journalists Under Brutal Conditions

CPJ states this is “the deadliest and most deliberate effort to kill and silence journalists” they’ve ever documented, serving to “silence those who document and bear witness to what human rights groups and UN experts agree is a genocide.”

Key findings:

• 29 journalists imprisoned (all Palestinian except 1)

• 27 held in administrative detention - no charges, no trial

• Israel ranks 2nd globally for torture claims against imprisoned journalists (38 reports, 24 alleging beatings/torture)

Israel has detained 202+ Palestinian journalists since Oct 2023, systematically preventing documentation of its military assault on #Gaza.

From the testimony of Palestinian journalist Farah Abu Ayash, detained since August 2024:

∙ Attacked by military dogs during arrest
∙ Tied to leaking water pipe overnight
∙ 55 days solitary confinement at Al-Moskobiya
∙ Systematic beatings, medical neglect, verbal abuse
∙ Cell infested with vermin at Ayalon prison
∙ Family denied contact; detention extended twice without charge

Israel killed more journalists in 2025 than any other country, according to a recent report by Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

The single deadliest attack in Gaza was a “double-tap” strike on a hospital in the south of the enclave on August 25, in which five journalists were killed, including Al Jazeera photographer Mohammad Salama.
