As we've discussed before, while much of America seems to be existing in a national fascist "unreality" bubble engineered by the US right and fascist collaborators in corporate media, the view from outside the realm is clearer. Ahead of World Press Freedom Day, international press freedom watchdog Reporters Without Borders is sounding the alarm in a report that indicates Trump's attempts to erode press freedoms are already succeeding.

commondreams.org/news/us-press

Reporters Without Borders Sounds Alarm Over Trump Effort to 'Bring the Press Into Line'

"Trump was elected to a second term after a campaign in which he denigrated the press on a daily basis and made explicit threats to weaponize the federal government against the media," the report states.

"His early moves in his second mandate to politicize the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), ban The Associated Press from the White House, or dismantle the U.S. Agency for Global Media, for example, have jeopardized the country's news outlets and indicate that he intends to follow through on his threats, setting up a potential crisis for American journalism," the publication continues, accusing Trump of using "false economic pretexts" to "bring the press into line."

As the article notes, the RSF report features a very granular look at press freedom in America that touches on crises that predate and exist independently from Trump; although there's no question his assaults on the media are exacerbating those problems. It examines subjects like the lack of public trust in media, the lack of financial support for actual journalism, and the disintegration of local news in the United States. With that noted however, RSF makes it abundantly clear that rhetorical attacks from a primarily right wing (fascist) political class have created an environment of intimidation and danger for journalists in America.

"Politicians' open disdain for the media has trickled down to the public," RSF added. "Journalists reporting on the ground can face harassment, intimidation, and assault while working. When covering demonstrations, journalists are sometimes attacked and physically assaulted by protestors or wrongfully arrested by police. According to the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker, there were 49 journalist arrests in 2024 compared to only 15 in 2023. The last journalist to be killed in the course of his work was Dylan Lyons in February of 2023."

These alarming comments about the rapid decline of American press freedom are part of a larger Reporters Without Borders global report noting that freedom of the press is in trouble on a planetary scale as well. But RSF isn't the only watchdog organization raising the alarm about the United States. The Committee to Protect Journalists has also released a highly critical report examining Trump's first one hundred days in office, in advance of World Press Freedom Day.

"On Wednesday, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) published a report on Trump's first 100 days in office, which the group said were "marked by a flurry of executive actions that have created a chilling effect and have the potential to curtail media freedoms."

"From denying access to upending respect for the independence of a free press to vilifying news organizations to threatening reprisals, this administration has begun to exert its power to punish or reward based on coverage," CPJ said. "Whether in the states or on the streets, this behavior is setting a new standard for how the public can treat journalists."

Frankly folks I don't have a ton to add here; while modern American society seems to hold a great deal of contempt for watchdog organizations that track extractivist plundering, wealth inequality, freedom of the press, and democratic rights, the fact that you're not going to hear about these kind of things on the evening news is why publicizing these reports is so important. Having well-research data and international observers to confirm our arguments that the Trump regime is trying to stop even what passes for our media from reporting negatively on their fascist activities is an important part of making folks who aren't paying enough attention accept that those arguments are based in an increasingly disturbing reality. If you want people to band together and stop a fascist takeover, they have to be aware its happening and the work of organizations like RSF and CPJ help us make each other aware of the severity of the problem.

#Palestine / 2024 was the deadliest year on record for journalists with majority killed by Israel's occupation force in Gaza

The Committee to Protect Journalists (#CPJ) reports that 2024 saw the highest number of journalist killings since they began tracking data, with at least 124 journalists and media workers killed. A significant majority, nearly two-thirds, were Palestinians killed by Israeli forces in #Gaza. The CPJ documented 85 journalists and media workers killed in the Israel-Gaza war in 2024, and 78 in 2023.

The CPJ is investigating 20 additional killings where it believes Israel may have specifically targeted journalists. International humanitarian law considers journalists civilians, and targeting them in conflict is a war crime.

#Palestine / CPJ Urges EU to secure media access and justice in Gaza post-ceasefire

The Committee to Protect Journalists calls on the European Union to leverage the #Gaza ceasefire to ensure press freedom, urging independent investigations into the deliberate targeting of journalists by Israeli forces during the 15-month war. CPJ emphasizes the unprecedented death toll of journalists since October 7, 2023, with evidence suggesting war crimes. They demand international media access to Gaza, reform of Israeli press restrictions, and threaten to request suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement if accountability and access are not met. #CPJ also mentions ongoing abuses, including detention and censorship, and urges the EU to uphold its values by supporting media freedom and justice in Gaza.

[followup] #Palestine / CPJ urges access and war crime probes for attacks on media

Following reports of a ceasefire agreement between #Israel and #Hamas in #Gaza, the Committee to Protect Journalists (#CPJ) has welcomed the news and is urging authorities to grant immediate and unconditional access to Gaza for journalists and independent human rights experts to investigate potential war crimes against the media.

The CPJ highlights the immense sacrifices made by journalists in reporting from Gaza, where at least 165 journalists and media workers have been killed since October 7, 2023, with evidence suggesting at least 13 were deliberately targeted by Israeli forces.

#Palestine / Israel second only to China in imprisoning journalists worldwide

#Israel ranks second globally, behind only #China, in the number of journalists imprisoned in 2024, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (#CPJ). As of December 1, 2024, 43 journalists were detained in Israel compared to 50 in China and 30 in Russia. Many of the detained journalists in Israel/Palestine are held under administrative detention without formal charges, a practice criticized for violating international human rights law and aimed at suppressing coverage of Israeli actions, particularly in #Gaza.

There are contracts in France called #CPJ Chaire de Professeur Junior, launched in 2021 with a five-year investment.

They seem quite similar to tenure-track positions. Although none has already probably reached the end already, many are in the mid-term evaluation.

'Journalists in Gaza Face Immense Pressure From Hamas, but Israel's Attacks Are Killing Them'
The Committee to Protect Journalists is monitoring the Israel-Gaza war at a time when violence against journalists is at an unprecedented level, and they are being targeted 'not because they are criminals, but because they are practicing journalism,' according to the NGO's regional observerWe need access for foreign reporters to enter Gaza, as this would enable the collection of much more detailed and reliable information. Despite the challenges in gathering evidence, we continue to insist on clear and transparent proof to definitively determine the nature of an attack.

#Gaza / One year and climbing: Israel responsible for record journalist death toll

At least 128 journalists and media workers have been killed, making it the deadliest year for journalists since the Committee to Protect Journalists (#CPJ) began tracking in 1992.

75% of Palestinian journalists were killed by Israeli airstrikes. At least 5 killings were targeted murders by the IDF. No #IDF members have been held accountable for journalist killings or war crimes, and the number of ongoing investigations is unknown due to lack of transparency.

[…] The killings, along with censorship, arrests, the continued ban on independent media access into Gaza, persistent internet shutdowns, the destruction of media outlets, and displacement of the Gaza media community, have severely restricted reporting on the war and hampered documentation.

The Committee to Protect Journalists has said that at least 128 journalists and media workers, all but five of them Palestinian, have been killed.

Eleven percent of the journalists killed were female, and the majority of all killed were under 40 years old.

Three-quarters of the journalists were killed by Israeli air strikes. The rest were killed by other types of fire, including drone strikes, tank fire, shootings and fire of unknown type.
