Photos from a recent visit to New Jersey's Cape May Zoo.

I have complicated feelings about zoos. Some of my fondest memories come from working on the grounds crew at Mesker Zoo in Evansville, Indiana, back in the early '90s. But over the decades, I've also become more aware of the frequent disconnect between many zoos' stated missions and their actual practices.

The tortoise's weathered shell features distinct ridges and shades of brown, and its wrinkled legs and feet press into the ground as it moves. The goat's face is framed against a sunny backdrop, with its light-colored nose and curious expression in focus. The barn in the background features white trim and a crossbuck door design. A yellow shade canopy stretches overhead, providing contrast to the goat's dark coat.A kookaburra bird perched on a tree branch at the Cape May Zoo in Cape May, New Jersey, taken in August 2024. The bird has a ruffled appearance with brown, white, and gray feathers and a large beak, characteristic of its species. It looks off to the side, framed against a soft, blurred green background of grass. The kookaburra’s feathers are detailed, showing a pattern of layered texture, especially on its wings and tail. The peaceful scene captures the bird in a naturalistic setting.A large, light brown and grey pig standing in a sandy, enclosed area at the Cape May Zoo. The pig has coarse hair and prominent, slightly curved ears. The enclosure is bordered by a wire fence in the background, and the pig appears to be looking slightly downward, with the sunlight highlighting its features.

I fell in love with the WWII Bunker at Cape May Point, NJ back in 2003. Back then the beach was so eroded you could easily walk under the bunker between the support pylons. It was part of the coastal defense system during World War II. Built in 1942, this concrete structure once housed large guns to defend against enemy ships.

Look what I found cleaning out the basement - DIAMONDS! Cape May, is that near Cape Town, South Africa?

Sadly, no. Cape May Point is in New Jersey & they're just quartz.
