New Article: »Reviewing is Caring! Revaluing a Critical, but Invisibilized, Underappreciated, and Exploited Academic Practice«

How ChatGPT visually summarized the abstract of the paper on “Reviewing is Caring!”.

Together wie Mie Plotnikof (Aarhus University) and Matthias Wenzel (Leuphana University Lüneburg), I have written an essay proposing a care perspective to the way we organize academic peer review. The paper entitled “Reviewing is Caring! Revaluing a Critical, but Invisibilized, Underappreciated, and Exploited Academic Practice” has now been published open access in Organization. Check out the abstract below:

Reviewing is critical to advancing scholarly knowledge by assuring research standards and contouring what counts as novel. Yet, our system of reviewing submissions to journals is in crisis. With growing submission numbers, editors struggle to match these with qualified review capacities, unwillingly adding extra, often uneven, workloads on some reviewers, without equally distributing pressures or finding the most ‘ideal’ expert match. We propose to redress this issue in terms of care. Inspired by feminist care theory, we discuss how the current review system invisibilizes, underappreciates, and exploits the care invested in it. Furthermore, we suggest reconsidering the very organizing of the review system along the lines of care to reinvigorate the nurturing, knowledge-enhancing practices of reviewing. Specifically, we recommend (1) increasing the visibility of reviewing across journals, (2) recognizing reviewing as an inherent part of paid scholarly work, and (3) introducing cross-journal review limits. Together, we argue that such moves enable a more visibly appreciative and less easily exploitative organizing of reviewing as a scholarly practice of care that we and all science indeed rely on.

Finally, I created another visualization of the paper’s motif to share with the hashtag #1paper1meme:

[Hörtipp] Space Specials - Yung Widerspruch: Relaxation as a political necessity and act of resistance 👾
17.06.2025, 14:00 - 14:30

Questioning Gender politics & trying to find new ways of Queer using Space with the Studio "Gender & Space" supervised by Petra Hlaváčková & Nicole Sabella
at the Faculty of Architecture, Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Who is allowed to rest?
exploring the theme of ‘care and architecture’ on several levels. As reproductive work, it should be a collective and shared responsibility, but in fact it is mostly women* who are in charge of households and children in the traditional gender order – even if they are artists or architects themselves. (...) Care is a social value that should be accessible to everyone and which can also be a means of resistance to contemporary pressures for productivity. (...) Relaxation and self-care should be more than an individualised and costly requirement for surviving the work rate under neoliberalism. It should be treated as a political necessity and as an act of solidarity and resistance." 💬🧶🌫

"Many residential care facilities in Santa Clara County and across the country exploit their caretakers. A 2021 Santa Clara County Wage Theft Coalition study revealed 1,628 wage theft cases in the county’s residential care industry affecting 3,474 employees. Caregivers have lost in total more than $15 million in unpaid wages."

Yesterday I saw Karin Berger’s film „Küchengespräche mit Rebellinnen“ (Kitchen Talks with Rebel Women). Set in the kitchen, the film shares the oral histories of four women in the resistance. Women risking everything by doing political work, smuggling supplies, caring for the wounded, even carrying weapons.

#WomenInHistory #Resistance #FeministHistory  #OralHistory #CareWork #KarinBerger #AgnesPrimocic #UnsungHeroes #AustrianHistory  #Wikipedia

The title and setting are quietly radical, not only because the kitchen is the heart of any home, but also because to me it says so much about the value of labor and, specifically, care work. The fact that care work receives little recognition or appreciation in Austria is, unfortunately, a reality. But we must not continue to reinforce this societal blind spot. In that sense, the title is almost provocative and certainly subversive. It is a collection of the oral history of four women in the resistance.

What did the women of the resistance do?
They procured clothing, food, ammunition, and weapons. They wrote and distributed leaflets with political messages against fascism and against the Nazis. They cared for the wounded. Some even carried weapons themselves and participated in combat. Resistance takes many forms. Who would seriously tell a war veteran who worked in logistics, medical or supply services that they weren’t really part of the war?

Who gets to shape the historical narrative?
The women of the resistance have been largely left out of historical accounts. Agnes Primocic, for example, freed Sepp Plieseis from the Hallein concentration camp. By the end of the war, the partisan group Willy-Fred, which he had founded with the help of Resi Pesendorfer in the area of the Salzkammergut, had grown to around 500 members, including some armed men. The women - not in the direct line of fire, but right behind it - risked their lives and the lives of their families to support the partisans. And yet, they are not mentioned at all in Plieseis’ autobiography. Even Wikipedia reproduces his incomplete account, stating there were about 30 partisans who sustained themselves. The English article even states that he escaped the camp on his own(!).

Caring for the elderly and sick, helping with household chores, providing emotional support.
How much do people earn for such work in Ukraine? And why, despite the importance of social services, does this sector remain chronically underfunded by the state?
