It finally opened! And we were lucky to be sitting at the bar when a manager from an actual Applebee’s nearby came to drop off bags of food to the staff at Northside Yacht Club.

I don’t remember when they started doing these “takeovers,” but they lean into them with all their gusto, putting graphics up, creating new cocktail and food menus. Then they play it all up on social and here we are.

I am fairly certain this escapade resulted in a Cease & Desist letter which is now proudly framed in the bar area.

Today's harvest.

- More cheese sticks for my freezer.
- More vegan, gluten-free cookies for friends on a very restricted diet.
- This season's first tomatoes from plants I grew from seed.

I have a ziplock baggie filled with various tomato plant seeds and this year I didn't write down which sort it was that I grew - so I was surprised that all tomatoes are yellow. They taste great though.

The rest will go into the freezer. (Self control is so much easier if the objects of your desire* are frozen rock solid.)

*and these are true calory bombs:
500gr strong bread flour
200gr full fat milk
100gr butter (folded into what would become a many-layered dough**)
120gr cheese
30gr fresh yeast
19gr sugar
**like a croissant dough

Closeup from above of 16 large cheese twisters, cooling off on my two biggest cooling racks. They are nicely golden, and the cheese is half-seeping through the places where the dough was twisted. I dusted the cheese with tandoori powder, before folding the dough and enclosing cheese & tandoori powder, after which I cut the flattish slab of dough into 16 pieces and twisted each of them.

More cheese sticks. Yesterday's lot* were almost as purist as you can get: just bread dough & cheese (with a dusting of tandoori powder).
Today, I ground cumin & kardemom, and added to that homemade garlic powder and a bit of tandoori powder (the latter for the colour mostly). I spread that over the rested dough, before adding & enclosing the cheese.

I'll test one later; the rest will go straight into the freezer.

Most of these are for the freezer but I am happy to admit that I made them today, because I almost got up with the thought, 'I would love a cheese stick right now.'
So, I will have two or three or four of them before I will bag & freeze the rest of today's harvest.

Ingredients:
165gr water
6gr fresh yeast
250gr strong bread flour
4gr salt
150(!)gr grated cheese
A light dusting of tandoori powder

Closeup of fifteen cheese twisters: just before the sticks go into the oven you twist them into a corkscrewish shape, which also encourages some of the  cheese folded into the dough to leak out while they're baking. These still oven hot sticks have a nice gold colour, and the leaked bits of cheese look festive, some yellow, some almost orange (and because I mixed a bit of tandoori powder with the flour I used to cover the dough before cutting it into slices, the sticks have a bit of that red glow too, here and there.

The roads are slippery today, so the one hour (to & fro) walk to our village shop was a slow, careful process, which didn't encourage looking at the snowy vistas while walking. So this pic I took in my garden earlier must do. I'd also kneaded a batch of dough before I left. On my return I turned that into cheesy bread sticks; for the freezer, alas.

(I spread blitzed anchovies, gochujang, honey & fermented soy beans over the dough before adding the cheese.)

A bush in my garden, with snow clinging ti its thin branches, making it look a bitt like the world's coldest cotton plant.Twelve cheesy bread sticks before they went into the oven: they look pale, with gaping reddish wounds where the filling peeps through after I twisted each string of dough into its final stick shape.The sticks freshly out of the oven. What was white os now golden, with still flecks of white from the flour I sprinkled over them; the red wounds have opened and are dark bronze. They look rather wonderful and smell even better.
