#CityNatureChallenge

Here's one of the 7 moth species new to my garden this #CityNatureChallenge. Big thanks to NZ moth expert Neville Hudson for identifying it. The four I saw in April are the 8th–11th observations of this species from Canterbury on #iNaturalist. It's a NZ endemic species described in 1901 from a specimen collected in Christchurch, so it's not new to the city. Its caterpillars are known to feed on flowers of Pseudognaphalium (a native daisy) and Vittadinia (an exotic daisy). Neither is uncommon.

A photo of a greyish moth with a small orange blotch on the side of its wings. This is the NZ endemic moth Homoeosoma anaspila.

I saw one of these river eel photos of mine, from the recent #CityNatureChallenge, on a big screen this evening. I hadn't looked at it closely before and I noticed that there's a small crustacean on the photo. It looks quite distinctive. I've now made it a separate observation on #iNaturalist to see if any crustacean loving folk can help to ID it so I can learn more.

I love this, from the global summary of the #CityNatureChallenge results:

> In just one day, 1 million observations were uploaded to iNaturalist (it took nearly 7 years to reach that number when iNaturalist first started!)

> More than 50,000 species were recorded in a single day — about 1 in every 40 known species on Earth!

Outstanding!

@rai Sweet! We’re one observer under our 2024 record so that’s a great effort.

The tallies are coming through, and, WOW. Globally, almost 100,000 people in the participating #CityNatureChallenge cities over just 4-days made over *3.1 million observations* of *72,300 species*. Those numbers are so big it’s just silly. Too epic!

I’m super pleased to have been part of Aotearoa-NZ’s contribution of 61,593 observations of 4,615 species.

Only 3 participants in the #CityNatureChallenge from our region which is a bummer, but I just didn’t have the wherewithal to promote it how I was hoping to this year.

Motivation to get started earlier next year and work on spreading the word

We’ve just passed 100,000(!!) observations in all our City Nature Challenge events for Ōtautahi-Christchurch, 2019–2025. That’s a lot! We’ve also passed 2019 as our event with the most species and passed the 2024 record of most observations (we’re at 23,518). The last record to fall is 2024’s participants. We need just *five more* people to upload a photo from last weekend. Prod your friends. 😄

I just finished uploading my 2nd day of observations from the #CityNatureChallenge last Friday–Monday. I'm up to 4,410 obs of 773 species. Onto last Sunday's observations now.

We've got until the end of Sunday to get everything uploaded and identified for the final CNC tally.

This is now the biggest CNC for Ōtautahi-Christchurch in observations (22,102 and rising!!), and we're 29 species away from our species record, which I reckon we'll pass.

A screenshot from iNaturalist showing my observations from 25–26 April 2025 (with more identifications still to be made on some of these observations). It shows a map of points where I went, and a tally of how many observations and species (which I added to the text of my toot).

After a whole week (wow, time flies) and much ado... one of the most amazing butterflies I've ever seen. The photo doesn't do the color justice!

The #CityNatureChallenge event is surging on #iNaturalist. New Zealand has already made more observations, by more people, than any previous challenge, and is closing in on the record number of species as more identifications, and observations, are uploaded.

The observation window was Friday–Monday and we've got until the end of this Sunday to get everything uploaded and identified.

Last night I finished uploading my observations from the Friday. Onto Saturday now.

We've been moving to a new house this week so I haven't been able to share my #CityNatureChallenge photos as much as I'd hoped, but I will be able to soon! I think the actual moving part will be done today

During the City Nature Challenge last weekend we organised bike field trips here in the coastal Amazon region with our students. One of them photographed a native gymnosperm, a species of Gnetum. These are frequently not recognized as such — at first glance, they look like any angiosperm liana, especially in sterile conditions. However, the swollen nodes of the seed-bearing strobili give them away when examining more closely.

The four days of observing in #CityNatureChallenge are done and now it's a week for uploading and identifying all the things that have been found.

Aotearoa-New Zealand is well on track for our biggest City Nature Challenge results yet, in terms of observations, species, and observers.

Everyone can help with identifications on #iNaturalist, whether you know something is a flowering plant, a daisy, or a *Senecio minimus*. Helping with IDs is also a great way to learn.

It's #InverteFest and #iNaturalist's #CityNatureChallenge, so I might skip #Monsterdon tonight and go out looking for bugs…

Doing my bit for Défi Nature Urbaine Paris 2025 project. Exploring the area and learning about nature in Paris.
Also opportunity to think about mediocre citizen science - I'm somewhere in top 30, but it feels like I've done very little!

This year, I've increased my cities count in #CityNatureChallenge to two - this year I'm contributing in Paris (and it was a lovely day to go and learn about nature around me) #CitizenScience #CNC25 linktr.ee/cncparisIDF
