A light orange caterpillar, the larva of the Fir Coneworm moth, Dioryctria abietivorella. It is crawling on wet scales of a Douglas-fir cone, angling downward to the right, and lifts its head to look at us. The eyes are more yellow than orange, and glossy. There are a few spiky hairs along the body. The cones are brown; we see the edges of a few scales, a small part of the whole cone.

I meant to post this one on Christmas, but the days got away from me. The prompt immediately made me think of how octopuses sometimes just... crawl out of the water and give people a shell. (Is it a gift? A threat? Who knows! But I like to think the former. 😊)
