A collection of things often mistaken for eggs. What can be mistaken for eggs? Lots of things!

Here's Scott Loarie from #iNaturalist giving a TED talk this year.
Scott leads with the incredible rediscovery of the New Zealand frosted phoenix moth, a large distinctive moth that was feared extinct. That is, until one was photographed and uploaded to iNat by a Swedish birder chasing kiwi on a holiday in New Zealand's Stewart Island.
As Scott says in his talk, there are not nearly enough professional biologists to keep up with documenting the many changes in the natural world. Everyone can play a role in understanding how the species are faring in their local ecosystems.

What Counts as Wild? On Doves, Junglefowl, and Birding Semantics in the Grenadines
While in Bequia, I saw, heard, and photographed African Collared-Doves. In St. Vincent, I encountered Eurasian Collared-Doves, both vocal and visible. In both cases, Merlin ID instantly recognised them—no disclaimers, no qualifiers. Just birds. Wild ones, apparently. What I didn’t see were Red Junglefowl. But I heard them. Their crowing echoed from hillsides and yards,…

@RolfAE Tolle Aktion.
@JenniferJorgenson PSA: even if you don't have photographs worthy of magazine covers 👍✊🤘 I hope people will contribute pollinator images to crowdsourced nature observation platforms like #iNaturalist (Pollinator decline is a very serious problem.) A clip-on close-up "macro" lens can help you get closer than your built-in lens. Caveat: these buggers can move *very* quickly.

Took me three days to notice that this glasswing has been caught by an owlfly larva :P I did notice the brown spot in front, but assumed it might be some honey-dew producing insect the glasswing is visiting… #Ecuador #biodiversity #iNaturalist www.inaturalist.org/observations...
@researchbuzz @llewelly @drdrowland @springdiesel @douglasvb @ai6yr @marcprecipice #iNaturalist recently announced a grant from Google to make a demo incorporating generative AI in its computer vision species identification model (which is already severely unreliable for many taxa). It was received…poorly (see the comments section). https://www.inaturalist.org/blog/113184-inaturalist-receives-grant-to-improve-species-suggestions
Scary finding today in my garden:
The body of a dead slow worm (Anguis veronensis) was still "beating", but I found out it was infested by small millipedes (Blaniulus guttulatus) and maggots 😅
Well, this is the circle of life, recycle and get recycled ♻️

Google bribes #iNaturalist to use generative AI—volunteers quit in outrage

iNaturalist is reported to claim that the grant won't actually be used for generative AI but people are sceptical of the details so far, see thread here for discussion
