I would appreciate input/suggestions on this one. Do you have a favorite place that you get hexagon #stickers printed? I'm working on a fun project and could use some suggestions. Thanks! #devrel #cmgr #usergroups

I have come to the conclusion that I am not personally worried about AI replacing me.

As someone who has interviewed for roles where members of the hiring panel say things like, "I don't understand why anyone would want your job," I wish it luck in such endeavors.

OK friends, input appreciated:
I'm looking for a small, budget-friendly, video recording device. I would plan to do quick interviews at conferences, capture video while traveling, and quickly use this to either edit together or promote on different social platforms. A way to engage and promote the community.

What have you used? What devices do you have on your own wish-list for this function?

thanks in advance.

The martial arts community I launched on May 21, 2001 turned 24 years old today.

Last year, we completed a multi-year migration to move the community from old software that was slowly breaking to modern community software that would ensure the community could last 30, 40, 50 years. @chrispian worked a lot on this, with an assist from @mattmecham and crew.

“When I left [my first job in gaming], I realized that the amount of fear and anxiety that I was living with every day was crippling. … Then I left, and I realized that it was never about the job in terms of what I was doing, it was about the job in terms of what I had. I was so scared to lose it that I didn’t have the confidence that I used to have. … It took leaving to get where I am now.” –Joe King

“Section 230 protects any person or any entity that publishes other people’s content online. That is pretty much every person and entity that I know. There’s nothing in its language that limits it to Big Tech. I actually hear this a lot from my friends in the legacy news media community who feel like Big Tech got this statutory advantage that they don’t have. ...

Like thousands of others, I am now a minority owner of the Oakland Ballers, an independent pro baseball team, after participating in their recent Community Investment Round.

In purchasing these "fan shares," you are taking an actual, tiny stake in the team, alongside the majority owners and folks like Billie Joe Armstrong, Too $hort, Alex Winter, and Chelsea Peretti.

Researchers at the University of Zurich spammed the r/changemyview subreddit community with AI-generated comments in an effort to prove that LLMs could be used to persuade people to change their views. They did so without permission from Reddit, the moderators of the subreddit, or the members who were emotionally manipulated through their interaction with the comments.

A few points to follow.

Action figure trend. Here you go. COPPA-compliant.

A hand drawn illustration by Patrick. It is meant to be the packaging for an action figure of Patrick. "Patrick O'Keefe" is at the top, with callouts for "Community + Product" and "New." There is a simple drawing of Patrick, with 5 items: Policy, represented by a binder with "Community Guidelines" on the front. Bonus Sunglasses. Patience, represented by an hourglass. Spreadsheets, represented by a 7x7 block of spreadsheets with blue columns. Water/Coffee, represented by a brown mug. At the bottom, it says: "COPPA-compliant action figure." It includes "Quote #98," which is: "The first question you should ask any community software vendor is: 'How easy is it for me to leave you?'"

A fake forum thread starts with a post by Patrick, with a link to a forum post that violates the community guidelines as advertising. A private message has been sent to the member. The removed post reads: "This post is relevant to this community! Do not delete it! I'm here to tell you about the only app you'll ever need, so you'll be able to leave this community and never return. Check it out now!" The fake forum thread continues with a post by Patrick, with the reply by the member, JamesO, which reads: "Patrick, I can't believe you deleted my post! What a megalomaniac prick you are! Hitler would be proud of the work you are doing!" Patrick has banned the member. Next, we have a reply from Jeffrey Goldberg: "Hi, this is Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief at The Atlantic. Why have I been added to your community moderation documentation system?"
Once again, we have the fake forum thread post by Jeffrey Goldberg: "Hi, this is Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief at The Atlantic: "Hi, this is Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief at The Atlantic. Why have I been added to your community moderation documentation system?" Finally, we have a post by Patrick: "Uh... you must have just gotten sucked in here. :-?".

“When I was looking for the job in community … a lot of these companies were really looking for business development or sales or growth hacking. They were just sugar coating it with the title ‘community manager,’ which was really interesting to me because I know that for them it sounded appealing but they really didn’t want to invest in communities.” –Shreyas Narayanan Kutty

“... Generally, visualizations are for people other than just the person making them. Your audience is going to work that much harder to understand the message you’re trying to get across, so you’re creating some cognitive burden for them to just read it, let alone take away the point that you’re trying to get across.” –Tammy Armstrong

Higher Logic failed in its commitment to users of Vanilla Forums, an open source community software, and that's a real shame. It's also something that community pros cannot afford to forget.

“We [online community pros] should advocate for those higher roles because each time one of us does that, each time someone insists that they get the director title instead of the community manager title because their job reflects it … instead of just accepting that they can be community manager because, hey, the money’s good and I’m being paid like a director, it matters. …

From 2018, about automated content moderation tools: “The really important thing for us in the industry is probably going to be avoiding that old tech problem which is that there’s this piece of technology and it can solve everything. …

“The technology is really a tool. Just because you have a good tool you can’t just have one person wield it. … You’re going to need a lot of people using the same tool to truly be effective.” –@bassey
