An interesting account of the amazing recovery of a small bird after a serious injury is given by a chief petty officer on H.M.S. #Philomel, says the “Auckland Herald.” The bird, a white dove, was savagely attacked by a dog; and had its chest so torn open that its heart was actually exposed, the beating being plainly visible. After lying unattended for half an hour the bird was taken to the sick bay, where its wounds were sewn up with horse hair, and a bandage wound round its body. It was then put to bed in its box, while its mate waited nearby for company. On being visited next morning the bird was found to have freed itself from its bandages and to be flying around the room. When the door was opened it flew outside. The dove appears to be now as strong as ever, though the stitches can be plainly seen in its body.

The Prime Minister… remarked that the Dominion’s expenditure on #defence would soon be a million a year [ca. $122M today]… In the course of an interview with a “Post” reporter today Mr. Massey made it clear that his remarks had reference to both naval and land defence.

… At the present time New Zealand bears the cost of maintenance of a cruiser which forms a unit in the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy, and Mr. Massey has stated that at some time in the future another cruiser may also be obtained, and, later on, possibly a third. New Zealand does not buy these cruisers, or pay the cost of their construction, as some people think, the Dominion’s expenditure is merely on maintenance.

Mr. Massey concluded by saying that the arrangement under which New Zealand worked in regard to naval defence enabled the British Government to withdraw some of the smaller cruisers which it had out in these waters.

The USS Gerald R. Ford & its ~5k #USN #sailors & deck of #warplanes will be accompanied by #cruisers & #destroyers in a show of force that is meant to be ready to respond to anything, from possibly interdicting additional #weapons from reaching #Hamas & conducting #surveillance.

The large deployment… underscores the concern that the #UnitedStates has in trying to deter the #conflict from growing. The Israeli govt formal #DeclarationOfWar …gave the green light for "significant military steps"….

@makesubarugayagain You could stop both #boomers with a Subaru. You might need to get creative and a non-sacrificial helicopter that can lift the #Subaru and release it on command. And you need both pt #cruisers to park really close to each other.... Maybe at a #Costco in the compact car section. You might not need the #helicopter if you can set up a #crane nearby.

We had a great first Atlantic Topless #Cruisers tour today from Lower Sackville to the Lookoff in Kings County. It was cold but we enjoyed meeting new people, getting reacquainted with an old friend, and seeing 16 or so cool convertibles from a classic Rabbit and a #Miata or two to a bevy of fine #BMWs and #Mustangs.
