IRC page screenshot and alt text

#IRC #IM #Dalnet #Eggdrop #Bot

The image shows a screenshot of a mobile device displaying an article about the history of IRC (Internet Relay Chat). The background is black, and the text is white, with some links in blue. At the top, the time is 20:44, and the battery is at 87%. The title "History" is prominently displayed, followed by a link to "See also: IRCd ยง History." The article explains that IRC was created by Jarkko Oikarinen in August 1988 to replace MUT (MultiUser Talk) on a BBS called OuluBox at the University of Oulu in Finland. It mentions that Oikarinen intended to extend the BBS software to allow news in the Usenet style, real-time discussions, and similar BBS features. The first part implemented was the chat part, which he did with borrowed parts written by his friends Jyrki Kuoppala and Jukka Pihl. The first IRC network was running on a single server named tolsun.oulu.fi. Oikarinen found inspiration in a chat system known as Bitnet Relay, which operated on the BITNET. Jyrki Kuoppala pushed Oikarinen to ask Oulu University to free the IRC code so that it could be run outside of Oulu. After it was released, Jyrki Kuoppala immediately installed another server, creating the first "IRC network." The bottom of the screen shows navigation options: "Save," "Language," "Find in article," "Theme," and "Contents."

I've just made young friends of mine aware of Internet Relay Chat. They are so excited that we will be using IRC as a Communications protocol.

I have accounts on different server networks which are still thriving
I remember the wonderful Eggdrop bot running on the AmIRC channel on Dalnet

@Dendrobatus_Azureus

Thanks for the boost! Man, #DALnet... that's a name I haven't heard in a long time!

Of course, stuff like TeX have an important role to fill, and markdown has some serious limitations.

But for casual writing and notetaking, markdown is pretty wonderful.

I'm so glad that plain text won the format wars!!! XD

@gregly what you don't know can and does hurt you - cancer, autos, electricity, now home appliances are welcomed to the party. actually the fcc/ftc/sec and consumer reports/media do a good job in reporting issues and you can always file a class action if you feel neglected #whirlpool mirc chat #dalnet

@ian Damn right. Though I hope they don't start having votes on it :)

We went through decades of this with #IRC, when #Eris forked off the main universe, to create #EFNet, then the major forks of #Undernet, #Dalnet and #IRCNet - I suppose the big difference here is that different servers can allow different functionality within the same galaxy.

We just need to bring back #SixDegrees and the only change we need to make on it, is to make sure that the only post editor is #TECO

Downloaded to check if servers are still up. Apparently, the channel is still "alive". I miss my IRC friends. ๐Ÿ˜”
