Doing stuff with #Gentoo brings me back to simpler times. Hanging out in #IRC on #IRCNet, chatting to other nerds on our #gentoo.is channel. using the command /playing to display which song we were playing in #XMMS2, ricing out our WM/DE, t.A.T.u. were the new big thing around the world with their hit "All the things she said"..

We went through decades of this with #IRC, when #Eris forked off the main universe, to create #EFNet, then the major forks of #Undernet, #Dalnet and #IRCNet - I suppose the big difference here is that different servers can allow different functionality within the same galaxy.

We just need to bring back #SixDegrees and the only change we need to make on it, is to make sure that the only post editor is #TECO

@RetroSascha Guilty as charged. Seit über 20 Jahren #IRCnet, früher auch viel #Freenode, und immer noch dabei, wenn auch eher in einer kleinen nostalgischen Kerngruppe eines ehemals großen Kanals.

Gibt's hier noch aktive #IRC User? Oder zumindest welche, die vor 20 Jahren viel im #IRCNet unterwegs waren?

So, IRCNet:

- apparently has 3 different domains
- *NONE* of them have a server listing
- you can't even join #ircnet over their shitty javascript client to ask

Truly, peak 80s neckbeard usability.

@schwurbel Das klassische #IRCnet ist eine weltweite Föderation, aber natürlich kann jeder sein eigenes Netz mit eigenen Regeln aufmachen.
Im Client ist das Folgen von Tags kein Problem, aber das führt nicht dazu, dass die lokale Instanz die Daten auch bekommt. Soweit ich das verstehe, gibt das Protokoll das nicht her. Somit sieht jeder nur einen Bruchteil aller Toots mit dem gefolgten Hashtag. Und auf kleinen Instanzen ist das fast nichts.
