I actually agree with James “Mr. Establishment” Carville on the problem statement: establishment Democrats no longer offer anything resembling what Democratic voters actually want. But we disagree on the solution: I think actual progressives like WFP, DS, etc. need to coalesce and occupy the Democratic party like the #TeaParty occupied Republicans.

Establishment Dems like James Carville and Gavin Newsom (and Joe Biden and…and…) want to convince you that the way to victory is to be indistinguishable from Republicans. But as the last presidential election showed, a huge number of former Democratic voters were so unimpressed with the party’s offering that they’d rather stay home than vote. Imitating Republicans will cause both parties to fight over a dwindling number of conservatives while the majority of the nation tunes out and gets angrier at the failing system.

Carville’s latest remarks followed his comments from last week, where he urged the Democratic Party to move away from identity politics and refocus on what he sees as the top priority, winning elections.

Carville, famous for helping Bill Clinton win the White House in 1992, rattled off a few names — Working Families Party, Justice Democrats, Democratic Socialists — and suggested they stop calling themselves Democrats altogether.”

In the last 2 ½ years, eight members of Congress have died in office. All eight of them have been Democrats.

Democratic leaders need to start holding themselves accountable – by retiring when their time has come and making space for a new generation that can put fresh energy behind the party’s brand. When more than half of House Democrats over 75 say they're running for reelection, it’s clear that the message isn’t getting through.
