Beat Surrender, Foundation, 1985 on Shake Records

Beat Surrender (this one at least – there are many things by that name including the Jam’s last single) was a Boston band made up of Paul Souza, Jackson White, David Matthews, and Ted Lyon. Check out that 1985 look on the back cover!

Paul Souza went on to be in The Velveteen Playboys and Meliah Rage, and Jackson White went on to be in the Molly Maguires, Buster (with Phoebe Bridgers), and the Chris White Experience (with Chris White of The Zombies).

Today's random #Discogs choice David Matthews and The Grodeck Whipperjenny reissue 2019. Matthews was James Brown's musical director. This album was released in 1970 on Brown's record label. A Psychedelic rock album is not what you'd expect, but it's a fab listen.

Morning from the Colorado Flatirons, well at least for the next 14-minutes.

Today I'm starting out with this #DavidMatthews and the Central Park Kids cover of Beatles songs. It's really very good, especially the cover of "Michelle" - I don't think Matthews got the recognition that he deserved, most people remember him for #EstherPhillips and #IdrisMuhammad - they don't know he arranged the band for Simon & Garfunkel's "Central Park Live", or James Brown, or Nina Simone's CTI epic.
