Another hoverfly of the genus Syrphus. I think hoverflies are my favourite insect group. The eyes don't meet at the top of the head, indicating that this one is a female. Identification to species level in this genus is usually not possible from a photograph, but is most likely one of S. ribesii, S. vitripennis or S. torvus.

quadratische nahaufnahme einer mücke auf glitzerndem schnee. sie hat einen langestreckt walzenförmigen hinterleib, einen etwas kräftigeren thorax und einen kleinen knubbeligen kopf. die beine sind sehr dünn und lang. die zwei flügel sind langgestreckt tropfenförmig, hinten rund, transparent mit einer leichten braunen tönung und sehr fein geädert. sie sind nach hinten über dem hinterleib abgelegt, fast aber nicht ganz genau übereinander.

auf einer grauen oberfläche (verzinkter stahl) sitzt eine schwarze fliege. sie ist schlank und länglich, hat die flügel sauber auf dem rücken übereinandergelegt und streckt die kräftigen beine ziemlich gleichmäßig in alle richtungen. der kopf besteht zu 90% aus den riesigen ebenfalls schwarzen augen

Firebugs are easily ID'd thanks to their distinctive markings.

The same isn't true of another of today's insects. Apple's Photos claims it's in the Brachyopa genus, but I'm more taken with iNaturalist's suggestion of Tribe Tetanocerini, part of the marsh fly family, Sciomyzidae.

Even then, searching many pictures, I can't find an exact match – any ideas? 🤨

A small fly seen side-on perched facing downwards on a green leaf. The fly has large brick red eyes, well separated, a grey face, and red antennae & mouth. The back of the thorax is grey with black bristles, but turns redder on the sides. The abdomen is red on top, grey underneath, again with lots of smaller black bristles. The front legs are mostly grey, while the middle and hind ones are dark red again.

nahaufnahme, kleiner quadratischer ausschnitt. auf den vielen kleinen weißen blüten einer wilden möhre sitzt eine etwas ungewöhnliche fliege. ihr länglicher hinterleib ist anders als der schwarze rest des tiers an den seiten orange, hat aber oben drauf doch auch wieder einen schwarzen mittelstreifen. vom hinterende stehen borsten stachelig ab. hinter den flügelansätzen sind kleine weiße lappen, was es vor dem weißen hintergrund der blüten aussehen lässt als hätte die fliege eine wespentaille. der kopf ist fliegen-typisch von den sehr großen facettenaugen dominiert

herausvergrößerter quadratischer ausschnitt mit geringer auflösung, nur wenige hundert pixel kantenlänge.
am rand eines gleichmäßig hellgrünen blatts sitzt ein gerade mal 3 millimeter großes insekt, das aussieht wie eine kreuzung zwischen fruchtfliege und nachtfalter. es ist graubraun und weiß meliert und wirkt durch die überall, auch auf den flügeln, abstehenden länglichen schüppchen plüschig-pelzig, wenn auch ziemlich struppig. die flügel sind abgerundet, die gesamtform des tiers eher gedrungen, da das kopfende besonders pelzig-fluffig ist

wenn schon für den #DailyBug gerade keine aktuellen fotos rein kommen, nehme ich wenigstens eins das auch im dezember (aber '24) entstanden ist.

fenstermücke der gattung sylvicola, welche art genau ist nicht zu sagen, ich zitiere: "Possibly S. fenestralis but could also be S. cinctus or female S. zetterstedti. The differences between these species are only in the structures of the genitalia"
