Scientists just filmed a heart forming in 3D — and it changes everything we thought we knew about early development. #HeartFormation #Embryology #MedicalBreakthrough

Trabecular cartilage (Evolution 🧬)
Trabecular cartilages are paired, rod-shaped cartilages, which develop in the head of the vertebrate embryo. They are the primordia of the anterior part of the cranial base, and are derived from the cranial neural crest cells.

@DrHyde You would not believe what you can do under a dissecting microscope with a pair of very sharp forceps in one hand and a human eyelash wand in the other.
I taught a room full of undergraduates to repeat these classic experiments in one afternoon in 1999.

In videoing early development of snail embryos I have a problem with depth of focus. Unfortunately, access to z-stack capable microscope is prohibitively expensive, and also embryo timing is very irregular. I am sure that there must be a Heath Robinson solution, such as attaching a small reversible motor to the focus dial? Has anyone tried this? Photo shows one of the microscopes I am using (rescued from a skip), still in working order after 40+ years! #Embryo #embryology #microscopy

#US #startup charging couples to ‘screen #embryos for #IQ’
#Heliospect’s services were marketed at $50,000 for 100 embryos. Managers boasted they could produce gain of more than 6 IQ points. Selecting embryos for high IQ is not permitted under #UK law. While legal in US, where #embryology is more loosely regulated, IQ screening is not yet commercially available there.
Leading #geneticists and #bioethicists said the project raised a host of moral and medical issues.

Centuries ago, I published a manuscript on BioRχiv about the love/hate relationship between variability and robustness in embryogenesis.
And now, it's published in Science! I am so proud 🥳

We went through three (3!) rounds of revisions. Although we did not change a comma in the abstract, the revisions improved the quality of the work very much (we nearly doubled the sample size and added an entire figure).

📷 Yorgos Nikas #cell #celulas #embriologia #embryology #microscopia #microscopy
