#chaosaussiesauce and I got out to #eno state park today for the first hike of the year. It was the first time we've been that the upper part of the Holden Mill trail wasn't blocked off since tropical storm #chantal closed the park last July.

We got a weeeee bit off the upper trail - because I haven't seen this fellow since last June, a young pine tree growing directly out of one of the more interesting outcrops along the river.

Ended Wednesday and welcomed Thursday after a swim with Cluster & Eno a collaborative album by German electronic music group Cluster and English ambient musician Brian Eno. The style of this album is a collection of gentle melodies: a mixture of Eno's ambient sensibilities and Cluster's avant-garde style.

In June 1977, the duo of Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius joined with Brian Eno for recording sessions at Conny Plank's studio. The first release from those sessions on Sky Records was Cluster & Eno. Guest musicians on the album included Can bassist Holger Czukay and Asmus Tietchens on synthesizer. The association with Eno, already well known for involvement with pop acts like Roxy Music, brought Cluster a much wider audience than previous albums and international attention. - Wikipedia

Went for a hike along the #Eno River today. In addition to Sister Rat Snake here, I also saw three teens who were blessedly free of adult supervision. They stopped me to ask me what the name of the trail was, and then one of them said "Oh good, we aren't lost!" as they all consulted their paper map.

A black rat snake -- head and around 10 inches of body -- wends its way through a carpet of various tan-and-brown leaves of deciduous trees.

A photo of sun-and-shade along a riverbank. The river itself is not visible, but you can tell by the way the land slopes up in the background that it's over there somewhere.

The foreground is in shadow. The middle ground is dominated by a cluster of trees, with a quite large chunk of log -- probably six feet long by 8-10 inches in diameter -- wedged a good 10-12 feet up in the air across their branches.

This is more than likely evidence of the massive flooding that accompanied Tropical Storm Chantal when it came through this area in July 2025.

On the one hand, my walk along the #Eno River this morning was about as low-critter as they have all been this fall.

(I'm curious if any #naturalists or river #ecologists or #herpers on here have thoughts about the impact of the massive flooding caused by TS Chantal on the reptiles of the Eno River basin.

I just literally haven't seen a single Nerodia species along the Eno or New Hope Creek since Chantal.)

OTOH, I saw a gorgeous Kingfisher rocketing along the river, so that was awesome.
