THE “EVENING POST’S” BIRTHDAY.
Time brings its changes, but there are some changes which come only slowly. On 8th February, 1865, fifty-nine years ago to-day, the “Evening Post” commenced publication. As “The Post” enters upon its sixtieth year it is interesting to reprint one paragraph from the first issue :—
Householders, taking advantage of the great dearth of residences of any description, are asking the most exorbitant rents for hovels, lean-tos, and shanties of every conceivable build and sort. We understand the shed erected by Mr. Mears adjoining his saddlery establishment on Lambton quay has, after much competition, been let by him to a fruiterer at a weekly rental of thirty shillings [ca. $200 today].…
