What a great #biketooter day! I’ve come 💯 km completely on bike paths. The last 10km were on a tarmac path next to a dirt and sand road. That would never happen back home. Now somewhere south of #Breda, 🇳🇱 looking forward to some #exclave action tomorrow as we head south for the main event of the trip. It’s in Belgium, it’s bike-based, but what could it be? 4/n

Point Roberts, Washington

This one took some effort, Point Roberts is an exclave with no land connection to the rest of Washington and the United States. Visitors have to travel through Canada to reach Point Roberts and vice versa. Unfortunately the community was hit very hard during the pandemic as it was completely isolated. Now that the border is open again, I hope it recovers.

#PointRoberts, WA is a US #exclave, reachable from the mainland US only by traveling through Canada (or perhaps by boat).

It's a very small community with strong ties to its Canadian neighbours in Tsawwassen and Metro #Vancouver, which provide some necessary services to the community.

It's a popular destination for Canadians (and other people residing in 🇨🇦) who want to pick up purchases shipped from US suppliers, or to buy gas at a significant discount. But it's also appreciated for its beautiful Pacific Northwest beaches, including its not-obviously-guarded border marker along the eastern beach.

A nice place for this American in Canada to visit this Thanksgiving week! (Though in truth, 1. these pictures are older, 2. I went yesterday, and 3. I basically only went to pick up some US Amazon purchases.)

Repost from Reddit: apparently there's a funny #exclave of #Italy within #Switzerland. 14 km from Italy by road (even though only 1 km as the crow flies). They decided to remain Italy (Lombardy) democratically, in 1798 (nice, isn't it?). And they are famous for having a giant ugly casino.

I guess exclaves always look romantic; you start imagining that there HAS to be something very special about them. But maybe not always haha :)
