Happy birthday to #physicist Lise Meitner (1878-1968) who explained #nuclear #fission. She worked with chemists Hahn & Straßmann in 30s Berlin, investigating whether there were any stable elements beyond uranium. They discovered bombarding nucleus of U-235 with neutrons actually triggered it to fission, or break, into 2 nuclei of roughly half the size & some free neutrons! 🧵1/5

My linocut print of Lise Meitner holding her glasses in one hand, while leaning on the other, in silver ink. In red ink is a nuclear fission chain reaction shown with a single neutron (white ball with motion lines) emanating from her head towards a nucleus (conglomerate of red proton and white neutron balls) then an arrow to it fissioning (becoming split into two adjacent then two separate halves with extra free neutrons). These neutrons in turn all begin the same process with other nuclei and the chain reaction takes up the left side of the print next to Meitner.

#KnowledgeBit: Lise Meitner, called the "German #MarieCurie" by Albert Einstein, was a brilliant Austrian-Swedish physicist who made significant contributions to the field of nuclear physics.

She is most famous for her work on #Nuclear #Fission, a discovery for which her colleague Otto Hahn received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1944.

@rogueamoeba.com #Fission: Is is possible to change the new color scheme? The low contrast is not eye-friendly.

@juergen_hubert
Erosion is one approach, do we know how trickling away Vs newly joining moves size?

Recruiting is a sub-class of that - make an instance designed for 10 000 mastodon.social users, tell them in waves, see them move.

Fission is a more obvious approach, where at some size the members of big instance.maybe suddenly find they are either members of biginstance1.maybe or biginstance2.maybe

You'll have to do something mildly clever with the admins of course.

Recent advances in #Nuclear energy focus on two main areas: next-generation #Fission reactors and the pursuit of nuclear #Fusion.

Next-generation fission reactors, like small modular reactors (SMRs), are designed to be safer, more efficient, and produce less waste, while ongoing research into nuclear fusion, the process that powers the sun, has seen recent breakthroughs in achieving ignition.

Mural on cooling tower at Cruas-Meysse nuclear power plant, Ardèche, France. I wonder whether the wind turbine functions as an art installation, too. #nuclear #power #fission #energy #france #provence #rhone #painting #art #electricity #mural #art #greenwashing #wind #turbine

It's end of June, and #NuclearPowerPlant|s in #France already have to decrease their power output because the water in the rivers is too warm to provide proper cooling.

#NuclearPower is not a sustainable, reliable source of energy unless we manage to stop the #climatecatastrophe first (which, realistically, we won't, even though we have to).

I have to admit I’ve been looking for a problem to solve with as an excuse to use or maybe at work.

At work, as part of infra ops we have a handful of webhooks and controllers that could be a function.

I normally talk myself out of it because of the perceived complexity of ingress.

My intangible line of thinking is if that tool is there it would be reached for more often for adhoc Jenkins jobs, crons, potentially webhooks.

It could turn nuclear waste into fuel and combine the strengths of two nuclear technologies.

Even the shortest-lived #radioactivewaste remains dangerous for longer than recorded human history and every strategy I've ever read about to manage it begins to fail long before the waste is inert. Since when is trading #carbon for #irradiation a valid strategy?
