#FolktaleWeekGate

Here's my image inspired by the #FolktaleWeek prompt word, "Gate".

I thought about making it a picket fence with a gate, but they weren't popular until about a century after the period I'm setting my story in.

They were originally wooden tree trunk pikes. Yoicks. Brings whole new meaning to "good fences make good neighbors".

But then settled for a more magical mysterious sort of portal gate. It helped me imagine my variation of the Little Red tale in that sort of setting. Not sure this ultimately would end up being used, but it was a great exercise!

An illustrated scene of a forest area with a wooden stack of sticks and trunks creating an arch over a glowing ball of yellow. In the background are more trees. In the foreground are leaves lit by the glowing orb.

For the 2nd #FolktaleWeek2024 #FolktaleWeekGate I made a #linocut illustrating the Chinese legend of Longmen or The Dragon Gate atop a waterfall on a legendary mountain. According to folklore, many carp swim upstream in the mighty Yellow River, against the strong current, but few are brave or strong enough to make the jump over the waterfall where it cut through a cleft in the Longmen mountains. 🧡1/n

My linocut illustration of the legend of the Dragon Gate on 8” x 10” Japanese washi paper shows dark blue almost black steep mountain with pale blue waterfall and 3 blue-black koi attempting to climb. At the top is a red gate and red and gold Chinese dragon.

Drawing directly on my block (and messing up the claws but you won’t see that when I am done) for the second #folktaleweek2024 prompt #folktaleWeekGate.

Maybe you know this one? A folktale about jumping carp, a gate and dragons πŸ‰ 🐟

A pencil drawing on an uncarved green vinyl Lino block on a cutting mat with grid. The drawing shows three carp trying to climb a waterfall with gate at the top (like a Japanese torii gate). Across the top of the drawing is a Chinese style dragon. I’ve obviously erased, smudged and redrawn the front claw.
