#ArtAdventCalendar day 20: a #FolktaleWeek2024 piece. I thought I would tell another Canadian #folktale about a flaming ghost ship or strange light phenomenon which has been observed in New Brunswick in the Baie des Chaleurs. There are a few different versions of the folklore but the one I like is told in A.W.H. Eaton’s poem ‘The Phantom Light of the Baie des Chaleurs’ & I 🧵

My multimedia artwork is on a toned cyanotype of a misty bay with forest across the water and cloudy or misty skies. In black I Lino block printed a three-masted ship in grey, with Jolly Roger flag in black, overprinted with flames in reds and orange. Hand-lettered script in black there is a stanza of the poem, “This is the tale of the phantom light
That fills the mariner's heart, at night,
With dread as it gleams o'er his path on the bay,
Now by the shore, then far away,
Fierce as the flame in sunset skies,
Cold as the winter moon that lies
On the Baie des Chaleurs.” from ‘The Phantom Light Of the Baie Des Chaleurs’ by A. W. H. Eaton

Day 19 #ArtAdventCalendar: my #linocut of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale Thumbelina (Tommelise) I made for #FolktaleWeek2024.

In my illustration with collaged Japanese papers, Thumbelina rides the swallow, narrator of our tale, at the moment she finally meets someone her size and to her liking, in the tiny flower-fairy prince, surrounded by flowers.

My 9.25” x 12.5” linocut print on ivory washi with collaged papers illustrates Thumbelina. The tiny girl printed in black with her hair streaming out behind her swoops in on the back of a swallow in black, and blue with a red chin. Below her a tiny flower fairy prince in a crown with wings stands in a flower and reaches towards her, printed in gold. The base of the print is covered in large flowers in pink, peach, yellow, orange and violet with green stems and leaves. The rest of the print is framed with apple blossoms in pink on white with green leaves.

#ArtAdventCalendar day 14: a print I made the 4th #FolktaleWeek2024 prompt trail. I thought of the fairytale Hans My Hedgehog, who knew all the right trails. I love the absurdity of a half-hedgehog man riding a rooster and playing the bagpipes.

His parents desperately wanted a child, and his father foolishly wished for “even a hedgehog”; his wife gives birth to a baby who’s hedgehog from the waist up. 🧵

My Lino block print on white 8” x 10” Japanese paper each with a rooster viewed from the side. The rooster has a red crest, brown body and feet with blue and green under- and tail feathers. There’s a little green grass by its feet. One foot is lifted like it’s walking forward. There’s a little man who is hedgehog from the waist up, wearing boots, pants and a vest, holding bagpipes riding the rooster like a horse.

Going live today, 1-4:00pm PST (UTC-7) on MakerTube and Twitch, where I’ll be wrapping up the Folktale Week event with the final prompt word: “Bloom.” I’ll be doing some illustrated page backgrounds inspired by the style of Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh.

Soothing music, chill vibe, and tea! Lurkers welcome!

The last #FolktaleWeek2024 prompt is #FolktaleWeekBlossom so I printed an illustration of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale Thumbelina (Tommelise).

For #FolktaleWeekBone #FolktaleWeek2024 I illustrated the Slavic #fairytale Vasilisa the Beautiful with the skull lantern. Before her mother’s death, she gave Vasilisa a wooden doll & told her to keep it secret & with her always & whenever she needed help or comfort to offer the doll food & water & seek her help & the doll would provide. The doll helped her with her grief after her mother’s death. 🧵1/n

My Lino block print of Vasilisa the Beautiful as a young woman with a long braid holding the skull on a staff lantern with Baba Yaga’s chicken leg hut with bone fence and forest in the background. Vasilisa is in a red dress with belt, red flowered white blouse and has a long golden braid. The skull lantern glows with yellow light. The hut is brown with glowing windows. The forest is green with black trees and scattered red and yellow mushrooms.

Today's 2024 Folktale Week word prompt is "Depth".

I turned to the work of Margaret MacDonald Mackintosh for inspiration, and came up with this. Little Red's cloak is billowing out around her in a stylized water-scape.

I then made it a greeting card!

AND a free phone wallpaper! Enjoy!

Today's #FolktaleWeek2024 prompt word is "Blight". I'm not sure how to make that pretty, personally, so I just used it as an opportunity to create a background image that frames a piece of text by living in the gutter of the page spread... I think it'll be quite useful and evocative when actually used as intended.

But here's a phone wallpaper version for you, just in case you like this particular tree on your phone! 😊

The 3rd #FolktaleWeek2024 prompt is blight, so I carved & hand-printed a Lino block print of an Itsumade. #FolktaleWeekBlight A supernatural creature from Japanese folklore called a kaichō, or strange or eerie bird, the Itsumade has a human face with sharp beak-like mouth, fearsome claws with talons as sharp as swords, wings & body of a snake. This terrifying yōkai or spirit appears in the night sky when 🧵

My linocut print Itsumade on 9” x 12” ivory washi paper shows the mythological creature with the face of a man complete with moustache, yellow bird beak, burgundy wings and legs with big claws and scaly green snake body swirling through the night sky between clouds and above the blue and grey roofs of a Japanese town.

Here's my image inspired by the #FolktaleWeek prompt word, "Gate".

I thought about making it a picket fence with a gate, but they weren't popular until about a century after the period I'm setting my story in.

They were originally wooden tree trunk pikes. Yoicks. Brings whole new meaning to "good fences make good neighbors".

But then settled for a more magical mysterious sort of portal gate. It helped me imagine my variation of the Little Red tale in that sort of setting. Not sure this ultimately would end up being used, but it was a great exercise!
