You know what sayings make me grit my teeth? "You get what you pay for" and "if you're not paying for it, you're the product."
These are some of the most capitalistic sayings I hear regularly. They completely ignore the concept of a gift economy. I grew up in places where folks freely shared what they had with one another. I grew up gleaning farmers' fields after harvest. I grew up sharing what I had with other folks.
When I was really poor and couldn't afford lessons, I had dance and martial arts instructors who taught me for free. And I continued that by freely sharing my various knowledges with other people. I save seeds and share them with food sovereignty groups. I teach people how to forage safely and honourably.
Some of the best dance lessons I ever had were taught to me for free around a campfire. I was taught how to forage and garden and care for animals, and I didn't pay money to learn.
I'm not saying people should expect free things. We do still live under capitalism. But free does not necessarily equal exploitation. Free does not mean something isn't valuable. #capitalism #FoodShouldBeFree #GiftEconomy
