Followup. I ended up using #friture. It (more or less) Just Worked.
People suggested several plugin-based solutions, and I'm excited to look into them. Having these analyses at multiple points in an effects chain sounds very useful! Right now, though, I'm so new to music production that even plugins are a little mysterious. These are definitely some of the ones I'm going to be learning first, though!
