First flowers out on the Grevillea 'Cupid's Dream' - popular with the local grass-darts. With classic hybrids like 'Pink Surprise' and 'Misty Pink' difficult to find in nurseries these days 'Cupid's Dream' could become an excellent alternative with sprays of pink flowers and deeply divided blue/green foliage.

Grevilleas are always a good way to attract wildlife to your garden but these 'Cupid's Dream' hybrids are already proving popular with some of the smaller locals and I haven't even taken them out of the pots or removed the labels yet! (Eastern Dwarf Tree Frog - Litoria fallax).

Grevillea leptobotrys (garden/grafted) - low-mounding WA species featuring delicate sprays of uniquely shaped lilac/pink flowers + blue/grey foliage & reddish new growth. An outstanding rockery feature now grown commercially (as 'Lilac Tangles') and widely available in general nurseries as grafted plants in SE NSW. Definitely worth a spot in the garden if you see one at you local nursery!

Grevillea hilliana (white yiel yiel / white silky oak) still flowering well in the garden in mid-December. A fair bit south of its natural range here at Corunna, NSW but has done well grafted onto G. robusta. Flowers open from yellow/green buds to impressive cylindrical clusters of white flowers

Grevillea stenomera (grafted) - garden plant, Corunna, NSW. The flowers on this rare/vulnerable WA species are maybe not that spectacular but it's an outstanding accent foliage plant with attractive fine blue/grey leaves.

Grafted plants can do well in eastern summer humidity - this one on G. robusta rootstock is now almost 20 years old now and has been cut back to almost nothing several times. Unfortunately it's rarely seen in regular nurseries but definitely worth picking up from specialist native growers or rare plant sales if you see one!

Grevillea 'Dorothy Gordon' flowering in the local nursery (Tilba Tilba, NSW) - good to see some excellent, larger plants of this distinctive hybrid in stock (and in flower) from local growers. Features both attractive flowers and foliage plus responds well to pruning and can be used as a striking native screen with a regular cut. Sometimes described as a G.beadleana hybrid but is apparently G. sessilis x G. paradoxa (according to the breeders). Definitely worth a spot in east coast Oz gardens (without heavy frosts) - not sure if it's available in other countries.

First flower out on the Grevillea 'Roberts Ripper' - looks like it might be a keeper! Foliage is a bit prickly but still fairly neat and attractive - similar to Grevillea treueriana maybe (I'm not sure of the exact parentage of this hybrid). Flowers are an unusual darkish purple/pink - at least initially.

Picked up this grafted plant (on G. robusta) at a native plant sale in autumn but only planted it out in the garden recently. Looks like the combination of foliage and flowers will be popular with birds when it gets a bit larger - should grow to 1m x 1.5m.

Carrington Falls Grevillea - Grevillea rivularis - endangered NSW species with a very limited population in the wild. I've ended up with several plants in a paddock, presumably seedlings from an old stock plant. Foliage is pretty prickly which is probably why it's rarely seen in nurseries - with many cultivated plants actually x acanthifolia hybrids (like 'Carrington Cross'). G. rivularis is also said to be one part of the well known 'Bronze Rambler' hybrid (crossed with 'Poorinda Peter').

Robust roadside Conospermum taxifolium (variable smoke-bush) near Narrabarba, NSW. Over 1.5m high with attractive foliage + large flower spikes. Close to southern limit of this variable species here just north of the NSW/VIC border (scattered plants can still be found a little further south near Mallacoota in East Gippsland).

Grevillea patulifolia* in coastal heathland near Ulladulla, NSW. Leaves are more rigid/pointed than Grevillea linearifolia (which G. patulifolia was once included in) but the abundant slightly pink flowers are attractive.

Unfortunately don't see a lot of this or similar G. linearifolia related species in nirseries (outside of specialist native nurseries) although some compact coastal forms have been more widely grown. The slightly prickly foliage on G. patulifolia is probably not going to help it become a popular choice for growers or nurseries but I'd definitely grab a couple for my garden if I ever saw them for sale somewhere.

*Bungled the ID in original post - G. linearifolia is also growing nearby at this location but this is not it ... didn't realise Grevillea patulifolia could also be seen growing at Ulladulla.

Grevillea macleayana in coastal heathland near Ulladulla, NSW. These coastal forms with mostly entire, elliptic leaves + showy pink/red toothbrush racemes offer a lot of potential as garden plants but don't seem to be as common in nurseries as they were in the 80s/90s when growers still propagated actual species. Generally listed as rare but locally common at Ulladulla and around Jervis Bay.

The first flowers are out on my grafted Grevillea 'Orange Wow' - I think this is going to be a keeper. Fairly new hybrid now showing up (as both low and standard grafts) in nurseries. The flowers change from yellow -> orange -> burnt orange -> red. The plant is a low spreading shrub - should be a spectacular rockery feature when it has a few more flower heads in full bloom.

Grevillea calliantha (Foote's Grevillea) - grafted / garden (Corunna, SE NSW). Beautiful low-growing WA species with distinctive flowers featuring maroon/black styles. Flowers contrast well with greyish foliage.

Grafted plants can do well in the east but unfortunately are rarely seen in general nurseries. Listed as endangered in the wild with limited populations near Cataby, WA - so definitely worth a go if you can find one at a specialty native nursery or rare plant sale. #ConservationByCultivation
