If anyone is interested in helping me test something, it would be really cool if you attempt to follow @n1cck.us - from #GoToSocial instances as well as #Mastodon or #Lemmy places. I think it' s mostly working on mastodon, but #gts is still failing for some reason, and I'm trying to sort out if it's me or something in the application.

Anyways, feedback welcome, but mention me here because I won't receive replies on the other instance at this moment.

🏕️ my adventures in #selfhosting - day 175 (video launch day) 🍿​

Dear Fedi friends, you may have noticed that 20 minutes ago I made the announcement about the release of my Fediverse promo video on here. Why? 5000 character limit, so I could credit/thank everyone who helped. It really took a village to make it.

Today is not only the video's release day, but also, from the POV of a new self-hoster:

- a stress test for my self-hosted #PeerTube instance (worry level: low, they have P2P)
- a stress test for my self-hosted Ghost blog (it should hold up just fine with Varnish cache)
- and a test to see how far and wide a message posted on my #GoToSocial goes. If you're a fan of #GtS you may be pleased to see it mentioned in the video 🤗​

I was afraid of the infamous Mastodon Hug of Death (with hundreds / thousands of servers trying to fetch the video cover image) so I ended up uploading it as UNLISTED on my PeerTube and embedding it on my Ghost blog... this way Ghost (protected by Varnish cache) will take most of the hit. I also provided an alternative video location for it.

Curious to see how all these self-hosted services will do today.

I've recently, and very generously, been accepted to join an instance that is based on GoToSocial. I've been doing some testing, and is GtS much less resource intensive than Mastodon? It certainly feels like it, anyway.

P.S. It's an idea that some of us #polymaths had to create a new fediverse client (particularly for #GtS) for the terminal, likely in Go/#Issue9.

@dusnm gave us the inspiration to write it in Go, then quietly left before anyone assigned him any real work. >:)

(Just kidding, we all sat around, threw around some cool ideas, and then promptly did next to nothing. I think @sunarch did all the real organizational work; good on him)

setting up a #GoToSocial instance on my Linux VM again. (using cloudflare tunnels). tried this last time but whenever I tried to follow someone from a bigger #Mastodon server it never worked. maybe this time?

I still had the Mastodon label on my presentation site/digital business card but no icon to replace it now that I'm on GtS.

So I made a monochrome/transparent icon for @gotosocial

@twiglet @tchambers #GoToSocial admins were given the option to opt out of reporting stats to crawler services. Shame really, as it distorts how popular #GTS is.

Thank you to folks that answered my #GTS poll. Seems like a LOT of folks don't know what GTS is! GTS or #GoToSocial is a #GO written #activityPub #server for small groups of folks that's super lightweight, fast and easy to install. You can find them on #Fediverse at @gotosocial .

YES!!! #AVIF #FTW!!!

Just FYI, nsxiv, imv, and swayimg all support AVIF as well, although imv did oddly have a glitch with one of the images I tested it with. I'd never seen that happen before.

According to some people I've spoken with, JPEG is still king for high-fidelity images and minimizing loss upon re-compression, but AVIF just totally whips the llama's posterior when it comes to relatively high fidelity at crazy low file sizes (high compression).

AVIF is often noticeably better quality than #WebP at the same (low) file size and resolution, and parsecs beyond what JPEG can do with high compression factors.

If only the fediverse supported it!!! :(

We barely have WebP support (mostly on #GtS, maybe #snac (haven't tried it)), not on #Mastodon.
