What happened with gup.pe won't happen again the same way under better domain registration.

The .social domain group could have ownership problems, but it isn't as unstable as a misused country code.

Tip: Don't put too much trust into any non-government site or service with a two-letter endings after the dot in its domain name. That includes .io, which has contested ownership that arguably includes two or three high-surveillance militaries.

bummer. only just found out that Gup.pe groups no longer work & that the service is irredeemably broken, with the domain hijacked by someone pushing sign-up to fastmail.com. (Not a great look Fastmail.)

I'd post this to the #tea group, but alas #guppe is no more... It's the end of an era. I bought this cake in 1 BC (before covid) for a friend who returned it to me after a couple of years.

Fediverse admins, if you haven't already you might want to defederate the domain gup.pe

It's no longer controlled by the people who ran the Guppe groups service, so its accounts are all broken. It might be safest to just block the whole thing, and it would make your server's search results cleaner by excluding dead accounts.

(Guppe's domain was apparently bought against the will of its owners before it expired, due to some little-known clause in the domain's small print.)

Since #Guppe groups will not work any more, I decided to create a new group on violence studies using #FediGroups. It works in the same way as Guppe groups: if someone mentions the address in their post, the post is boosted to everyone who follows the group.
It would be great if you could boost this post to increase its visibility.

I have not seen a replacement for gup(.)pe groups yet. Small instances need such a service to reach others.

Our NGO has reserved the guppe(.)org domain and we will donate it to whoever can provide that service.

Alternatively, we will set it up using that domain as long as we can get some tech folks to help us.

Apart from any theoretical risks of hijacked accounts, the amount of non-functional accounts it displays in search results will be misleading your server's members.

The other thing that the #Guppe incident showed us is that the #Fediverse seriously needs the #Nomadic protocol.

Let's say the Fediverse understands the protocol: just move to a new domain, inform all instances "this is the new domain, automatically re-subscribe please", done. Life goes on for regular people.

I am not saying it is that easy or that's how exactly it will work. But it could've been avoided. Right now, entire communities are gone, many who were relying on it are now disconnected. (Then again, I can argue that it's time to clean the membership since many accounts are also stagnant.)

So, when? #ActivityPub2 ?
