(2/2) ZAHER'S ANALYSIS

Kurdish reaction to the current situation in Rojava*
Zaher Baher
22/01/2026

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Rojava, Syria, and neighbouring countries are going through a very complicated situation. It is very difficult for us to fully understand what is happening at the moment. What we know so far is that there is a hidden agenda involving Israel and the United States. The players in the region, including Turkey, the Syrian government, and IS, are taking part in a bloody game, and the blood is flowing from the body of Rojava.

We all know what happened and each of us may have our own prediction about this bloody game. I will only address the points I have observed here.

First, the wave of racism:

A widespread wave of racism and nationalism has spread across protests, demonstrations, media, and social media among Kurdish people. This wave is mainly driven by Iraqi Kurds, especially those in the Kurdish diaspora, many of whom are sitting behind computers and promoting extreme nationalism.

This is clearly evident in the areas I mentioned above. Dozens of videos are being shared on Facebook and WhatsApp showing how people in Rojava and their fighters are treated after being captured by the Syrian government army. These videos come from people in Gaza and from other chauvinist Arab groups and IS elements within the Syrian army. There are also many other videos that support Rojava and praise its fighters among Arabs and Turks, but they are rarely seen and are not widely circulated.

What is happening is very dangerous. These racist tendencies are not present among Kurdish people in Rojava or in Kurdistan in Turkey, and if they do exist, they are very rare. Such so-called activities do nothing but fuel the fire of a Kurdish-Arab war.

Second, the call for the removal of Tom Barrack:

Many people believe that what has happened in Rojava and Syria is the result of the policies of the US envoy Tom Barrack himself. They think that replacing him with someone else would change the situation in the interest of the Kurds. It is true that Tom Barrack is of Lebanese Arab descent and may have some inclination toward Arabs on minor issues, but he represents the policy of the US administration in Syria. He only implements US policies and cannot go against them. The proof of this is the presence of senior US military commanders and senior CIA intelligence officials in the region. If Tom Barrack were to reverse US policy, they would not remain silent.

Another piece of evidence is the prisons of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which were holding large numbers of IS prisoners and their families. When these prisons were attacked by the Syrian government army while being guarded by the SDF, the SDF informed US forces and warned them about how dangerous the situation could become if IS prisoners were released. However, the US forces did nothing. This raises the question of why they allowed the Syrian army to attack and break the prisons, leading to the release of IS prisoners.

Third: Trump is a businessman, not a politician:

Many Kurdish intellectuals and social media users say that Trump is a businessman, not a politician, when discussing his attitude toward Rojava and the Kurdish people. These people have little knowledge of politics or economics. They do not understand that politics is a reflection of the economy and serves economic interests, as if former US presidents were not connected to major businessmen and giant corporations.

Political administration is nothing but the protector of the economy and economic hegemony. The power and dominance of any country depend on its economic strength. For this reason, government policies, education programs, and various plans and efforts are aimed at economic growth, and even the army serves this purpose. Trump is both a politician and a major businessman. His political decisions reflect economic realities and are designed to protect and benefit the super-rich and giant corporations.

Fourth, the impact of this incident on the so-called peace process in Turkey:

There is no doubt that what is happening will have a very negative impact on the Kurds in Turkey, the PKK, and Ocalan himself. The SDF was the backbone of Rojava and of the Kurds in Turkey. While the SDF and the autonomous administration in Rojava were important to Erdogan and his government, the PKK was neither important nor threatening to them as much as Rojava. The PKK is under the control of the Turkish state. The Turkish government could have fought it at any time, as they did, and in doing so, destroyed three parts of Kurdistan. Erdogan and his allies in the government knew that the PKK’s armed movement had done the greatest service to the Turkish state since 2015, when the fighting started again between Turkish state and PKK, while it had not provided even the slightest benefit to the Kurds or to any part of Kurdistan.

Erdogan and his government consider Rojava so important and dangerous for the Turkish state that, if it were not for the US alliance with the SDF and the support it received not only from Kurdish people but also from many countries around the world, the Turkish government would have destroyed it from the start. They never hesitated to attack, as they did in 2018 when they managed to invade Afrin, one of the Kurdish regions in Rojava.

In my opinion, if the situation worsens and the war in Rojava continues between the SDF and the Syrian army, ending in the defeat of the SDF, it will also end the so-called peace process. Ocalan will either be ignored or forced to do what the Turkish state wants. The SDF was a great force and a very important moral support for Ocalan, and it is still significant. Defeating the SDF would be a defeat for both Ocalan and the PKK.

Fifth: Blaming the US:

Most Kurds, along with some European and Arab leftist politicians and governments, blame the US for being unfaithful to the Kurds, even though the Kurds have made all the sacrifices to defeat IS and protect their citizens in Europe, the US, and other countries.

Those who hold these views do not ask what agreement existed between the SDF and the United States. Anyone aware of the situation knows that the United States never made any promises to the SDF or to the Kurds of Rojava from the beginning. On one occasion, Trump said, “The Kurds are brave and good fighters. They have helped us destroy IS. We have given them their rights, helped them, and paid them.” Tom Barrack also confirmed this a few days ago, but in a different way, saying, “We no longer need the SDF, and now we have a government that is our ally in the fight against IS.”

The US not only did that, but it also came and divided the Kurds and the Kurdish resistance in Rojava. The US only had a contract with the SDF and worked with them, while rejecting the other two parts of Rojava: the autonomous administration and the Democratic Union Party (PYD) itself. The SDF is the army that protects the autonomous administration, while the PYD is its planner and leader.

The United States has never hidden that it is an ally of the SDF, not of the PYD or the autonomous administration. This policy of the United States, which all three parts of Rojava accepted from the beginning, was aimed against them and was extremely dangerous. It is therefore one of the factors behind what is happening now.

Many of us know that relying on the United States and Western countries is not reliable. They are not only pursuing their own interests, but most of them have no history of liberating any nation or supporting any revolutionary movement. On the contrary, they also have a bloody history.

Unfortunately, we are now seeing the same scenario that occurred in Afghanistan being repeated in Syria. All the sacrifices made in Afghanistan and all the money spent to overthrow the Taliban ended up bringing them back to power, which Trump highlighted during his election campaign as a major weakness of Biden and his administration. The same thing is happening in Syria, but this situation is extremely dangerous. It could lead to genocide, potentially spark an Arab-Kurdish war, and the destructive flames of this conflict could spread to Iraq and a few other countries in the region.

This is the plan and agenda of the United States and some Western countries.

It is time to learn a big lesson, not just in Rojava. We must reject the dirty role of political parties, leadership, sacred leaders, and armed warfare except in self-defence. It is time to organize ourselves outside the control of political parties and dominant leaders and thinkers. It is time to awaken. Let us reject the attractive slogans of “long live… and death to…” and move beyond thinking driven by emotion and feeling. We must think with our minds and learn from history about the bloody role of rulers and authoritarians. That is the only way forward. At the same time, we must stand up against the oppression and genocide of the Kurdish nation in Syria, and against the dark forces that seek to control the urgent course of history under the guise of religion, vanity, chauvinism, and fascism.

URGENT PRESS RELEASE

SYSTEMATIC ERADICATION AND MASS ATROCITY AGAINST THE KURDS IN SYRIA

The attacks that began on 6 January 2026 in the Kurdish neighborhoods of Aleppo represent not an
isolated outbreak of violence, but the opening phase of a long-prepared military and political
campaign aimed at dismantling Kurdish existence and self-rule in Syria. While formally conducted
under the banner of the Syrian Transitional Government, these operations are executed by jihadist
militias whose strategic coordination, logistical supply, and political backing are decisively provided
by the Turkish state. The silence, hesitation, or indirect acquiescence of international actors
(including anti-ISIS coalition) —particularly those that once designated the Syrian Democratic Forces
(SDF) as a strategic partner—has transformed this assault from a regional conflict into a profound
indictment of global moral and political failure.

Over the past weeks, the humanitarian consequences have reached catastrophic levels. Hundreds of
thousands of civilians have been forcibly displaced, hundreds have been killed, and entire
communities have been deprived of access to food, clean water, medical care, fuel, and electricity
amid harsh winter conditions. Critical civilian infrastructure has been systematically targeted. The city
of Kobanê, now under heavy military attack, several civilians killed and deliberate siege, faces an
unfolding humanitarian disaster and an acute risk of mass atrocity. These actions constitute grave
violations of international humanitarian law, while the international community’s posture of merely
“monitoring with concern” amounts, in practice, to complicity through inaction.

The jihadist armed groups loyal to Ahmed al-Sharaa have repeatedly violated announced truces
through targeted attacks, provocations, and cross-border actions, using ceasefires solely to
consolidate territorial control and prepare for further escalation.

We therefore urgently call upon the international community to take the following steps:

1. AN IMMEDIATE, CREDIBLE, AND INTERNATIONALLY MONITORED CEASEFIRE:
An international
monitoring mission must be deployed without delay to document conditions and violations on
the ground in real time.

2. THE LIFTING OF SIEGES AND ESTABLISHMENT OF PERMANENT HUMANITARIAN CORRIDORS:
Secure
and internationally guaranteed humanitarian corridors must be established to all besieged
areas, particularly Kobanê.

3. A POLITICAL PROCESS RECOGNIZING KURDISH SELF-DEFENSE AND SELF GOVERNANCE:
An internationally guaranteed political process must be re-launched that formally recognizes the
Kurdish people’s right to self-defense and democratic self-governance within a decentralized
Syria.

The solidarity shown by the global public has been a vital source of hope and deserves sincere
recognition. Today, while the situation may not yet meet the highest legal thresholds of international
crimes, it is clearly an ongoing massacre with an immediate and grave risk of further mass atrocity.
This danger is real and urgent.

# FRAGILE CEASEFIRE

The extension of the ceasefire is preventing major military conflict. Still, clashes and attacks are taking place in the front-lines. Mazlum Abdi made public declarations explaining how negotiations are ongoing and SDF is ready to start implementing the agreements, where among other things include that STG forces won't enter Kurdish cities.

- CLASHES OUTSKIRTS OF KOBANE, at least 4 armored vehicles of the STG destroyed by SDF after they tried to advance in Celebiye. Clashes in the Lafarge concrete plant, south of Kobane, allegedly captured by STG forces today.

- CLASHES AT CIL AXA, an Arab village, on the strategic road from Qamishlo to Derik. The SDF supressed the attack.

- CLASHES SOUTHERN HSK, in the rural regions of the mountains of Abd al Aziz (Ciya Qezwana). Recently Turkish drones struck positions in that area, where the SDF has a strong presence.

# AID CONVOY IN KOBANE HUMANITARIAN CORRIDORS

A convoy of 24 vehicles with food and other basic needs entered Kobane to assist those in need. Plans for humanitarian corridors to Kobane and to HSK are being displayed on Syrian State media, promising aid and evacuation of civilians to STG controlled areas.

# RUSSIAN FORCES LEFT QUAMISHLO BSAE

After contradictory reports of reinforcements and departure of Russian forces in Qamishlo, a reporter of al-monitor published a video from inside the empty Russian base, confirming their departure. Reportedly they left to their Khmeimim base near the Mediterranean sea. It is likely the Russians left on request of the STG. Previously the base function as a coordination point for joint patrols and as a shield for AANES against the Turkish state, because of shifting imperialist interests, specifically from the USA, the base has now lost its tactical relevance.

Yankees Go Home and leave Rojava in peace

"The situation in DAANES also called AANES or Rojava is in a deep state of flux with a lot of often contradictory informations being shared. Even during the research and writing time the situation has escalated and evolved. This was written between the 20th and 22nd of January and reflects to the best of my ability the events that happened up to that point."

Rojava Is Fighting for Its Survival

> For days now, the Syrian interim government, together with Islamist mercenaries, has been carrying out attacks on Rojava, a de facto autonomous region in northeastern Syria. Not only is a humanitarian #catastrophe imminent, but also the end of the #Kurdish self-government.

> [..] After the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December 2024, the Islamist militia Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), under Ahmed al-Sharaa, seized control of large parts of the region. As a historic al-Qaeda affiliate, HTS lacks both viable administrative structures and broad societal legitimacy.

> Nevertheless, Western states, especially the United States, have signaled an early strategic interest in the militia’s political rise. For the United States, the UK, and the EU, al-Sharaa appears as a weak actor that does not control large parts of the country and can thus be easily co-opted into long-term geopolitical interests in the Middle East. Since seizing power, HTS has presented a diplomatic front to the outside world, while repression and #massacres are the rule internally. Alawites in Latakia, Druze in Suweida, and now Kurds have been targeted.

# 15 DAYS CEASEFIRE EXTENSION

today, Saturday January 24, the original ceasefire officially ends. All day, people have been observing the situation tense to see what will happen next. Throughout the day various claims have been circulating, on the one hand that the ceasefire would be extended, on the other that the STG does not agree with an extension. Finally it was made official that the ceasefire is extended for 15 days to transfer ISIS prisoners out of Syria, and with pressure on AANES to integrate into the Syrian state.
So far, some 150 mid/high-level ISIS prisoners have been transferred by the US from AANES to Iraq. Bagdad urges European state to repatriate their nationals.
Despite, STG forces continues to violate the ceasefire agreement including further attacks and preparatory military movement, with heavy military build up around the city of Hasakah.

# DIRE SITUATION IN KOBANÊ

Because of the siege of Kobanê there is a growing shortage of food, water and fuel in the city. Additionally, the city got covered in snow. Heyva Sor reports 5 children have died in these harsh conditions. Heyva sor submitted an urgent appeal to the UN and the AANES made a call for humanitarian aid as well. UN official Farhan Haq is in contact with the STG to potentially send humanitarian aid, the UN also stated it wants to do more assesments of the situation. Until now no humanitarian aid has come to Kobanê.
On the 23rd it was reported that an SDF convoy reached Kobanê, with no further details of size known. In Kobane region and elsewhere, many residents of NES were internally displaced and seek shelter in the cities still under AANES governance.

# ATTACKS ON KURDISH DEMONSTRATIONS IN EUROPE

At a demonstration in Antwerp 6 people were injured, of which 2 heavily, because of a knife attack, all are in the hospital. Kurdish sources report that the perpetrators were salafists. In Hanover, a young man departing a demonstration carrying a YPG flag too has been stabbed. Outside of direct attacks, there have been many provocations made by outsiders attempting to de-rail the Kurdish demonstrations across European cities.

# INTERNATIONAL SUPPORT FOR ROJAVA

In many countries, in different shapes and forms, support for Rojava is growing. In addition to demonstrations and actions there are also many organizations and politicians voicing their concerns. Basque trade union ELA expressed their solidarity and denounced the European silence. Activists of Abya Yala came together in Bogota, discussed and planned a week of action. A Catalan MP made a speech in parliament to draw attention to the issue, an MP of the Uruguayan parliament also took this issue up in a speech. At least 10 members of the European Parliament from various countries raised the issue. Some Druze leaders have also expressed their support.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

# EVALUATION

We are very much on edge, not able to take a step back to evaluate all things that are happening. Still, we want to share some lines with you.

We won't extend now on what happened the last week, but we will briefly look at the current situation. We are now presented with a 15 days extension of the ongoing ceasefire, allegedly to ensure safe transport of the ISIS fighters to secure prisons in Iraq. Authorities of the DAANES have been demanding solutions for those prisoners for almost a decade, and now that US saw how those prisons will end up in hands of the STG, they rushed to evacuate the prisoners to Iraq. US even made statements blaming the SDF of being unreliable, accusing them of abandoning the prison security in al-Hol when STG forces were already assaulting the ISIS prison of Raqqa. Hypocrisy is a word that is too small for what US is doing. But let's not get lost on that and see what's on the ground.

Kobane is now under a brutal siege, with an extreme cold winter that brought snow all over Rojava. Several kids died from cold, since there is no electricity and no gasoline to ignite the stoves. Many people of the surrounding villages are escaping the artillery fire and assaults of STG forces, looking for shelter in the city of Kobane. Many refugees are sleeping in schools and improvised shelters, at temperatures below 0. The extension of the ceasefire may seem like good news, but people of Kobane are in dire need of humanitarian corridors where supplies can enter.

Unfortunately, STG forces and Turkey will probably use this siege to open corridors, not to bring supplies, but to evacuate civilians out of Kobane. That would make it easier for military forces to attack and asediate the city. Kobane is the symbol of resistance, the breaking point where the victory against ISIS started. They are eager to erase it, as a way to break the will of the revolution. We will closely following the situation there.

In the Cizire canton, major tensions are on the military build-up around Hasakah. So far, STG took over most Arab-majority areas, while DAANES are still in the main Kurdish populated places. Hasakah is the province's capital, and in many ways has been functioning as an administrative center for the region. Situated on the outskirts of the Kurdish majority areas, with also a big Arab population, this city is becoming the critical point of the ceasefire negotiations. STG forces are trying to cut the road between Hasakah and Qamishlo, controlling supply routes, but also cutting off the way for possible reinforcements.

Things don't look good, but the spirit of resistance is high. How the next 15 days of ceasefire will develop will determine the future of NES. It can move towards negotiated integration or to total war, and we need to be ready for both.

Revolutionary greetings! 🖤

# NEW CEASEFIRE - MULTIPLE VIOLATIONS

On January 20th, a 4-day ceasfire was anounced. The Syrian Transitional Government (STG) announced that during this time they will not advance further into Heseke or Qamishlo. The ceasfire is presented as a time given to SDF to discuss the proposal of the STG for dissolution of SDF, the intergration of SDF territories into Syria, and for its fighters to join the ranks of the new Syrian Army on individual basis.
The ceasefire is not fully respected by STG and SNA fighters who continue attacks, but is has halted the advances of the STG. So far though, there is not an outlook for a more peaceful solution after the 4 days end. In various villages though, spread over the current frontline, there are attacks by the Syrian army. Two Turkish drone strikes hit one internal security forces (Asayish) point and a hospital in Qamishli. At least 6 violations from STG of the ceasefire were reported within the first 19 hours by the SDF press office.

# CIVILIANS TAKE UP ARMS

The existential threat NES is facing as a whole, moves many families and individuals to pick up arms and take their place in the defense of their homes and cities. Many have joined YPG/YPJ, neighborhood watches, etc. The mobilization is called for by the SDF, but the society-wide response is voluntary.

# BESIEGED KOBANE

Kobane is besieged with either Turkish or Syrian enemy on all sides. Water, basic food supplies, electricity, and internet are completely cut off. Meanwhile, Turkey moves heavy artillery, tanks, and troops to the border, right next to Kobane. In Pirsus, just across the border, protestors have gathered in support.

# AL YA'RUBIAH

STG advances into Al Yarubiah at the border of NES to Kurdistan-Iraq after SDF had to withdraw. Syrian state aligned media claim that an ammunition depot exploded on STG soldiers because the SDF mined it while withdrawing. The SDF says this is a misleading claim, and that they did not carry out such an operation. The SDF-press statement says that "According to confirmed information available to us, the explosion resulted from an accident during the transfer of ammunition by Damascus factions, and our forces have no connection to it whatsoever."

# SDF WITHDRAWAL FROM AL-HOL CAMP

Because of lack of support from the international coalition, the SDF could no longer ensure the security of al-Hol camp. The Ministry of Interior of STG Declare Al Hol Camp as "Restricted Area". The current state of the camp in unclear, with some allegations of STG forces letting people leave the camp, others saying that there are clashes.

# RELEASED ISIS MEMBERS

RIC reports that there are reports of ISIS detainees being released from at least four prisons now in control of the STG, with detainees of two additional prisons also being led out but the affiliation of these prisoners cannot be confirmed at this time. These prisons house tens of thousands of ISIS members. They could pose a serious threat to the security of civilians in NES. Where all these prisoners went is unclear. Though Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) say to have caputred Mahmoud Hassan al-Jubouri, a high-ranking ISIS member while he attempted to cross from Syria into Iraq.
To prevent ISIS from regrouping, US organises the transfer of up to 7,000 ISIS prisoners from NES to Iraq. About 150 detainees have already been transferred. This follows a conversation between al Sharaa and US admiral Brad Cooper.
With Raqqa taken over by STG and Al Aqtaan prison besieged for days, a safe corridor is now demanded for the remaining SDF fighters who kept the position defending the prison of falling into Syrian army hands, thus seeking out a possibility for safe withdrawal.

# SYRIAN ARMY ADVANCES REMIND PAST JIHADIST AGRESSIONS

In various cities all around Europe thousands take to the street regularly protesting the attacks. Kurdish unity is strengthened with KRG (Kurdistan-Iraq) flags displayed alongside YPG/YPJ flags, as well as material help from KRG coming into Rojava. In Turkey, at the border to NES, protesters are met with brutal violence, including beatings, water canons and even life ammunition. Thousands were protesting in Nusaybin, on the Turkish border next to NES. Many were arrested, including journalists. Despite repressions, a vigil is maintained at the border.

"But after weeks of retreat, the revolution has stopped running and turned around to fight al-Shaara. As Kobane is again encircled, many have begun comparisons to the heroic stand Kurds took against ISIS, which marked the beginning of the caliphate’s downfall and the expansion of the women’s revolution. Maybe that comparison isn’t too far off. Time will tell if this is the end of a revolution, or if the resistance has only just begun."
