May 2025 is the 16th Anniversary of Bicycling Monterey, Monterey County’s Local Partner of the California Bicycle Coalition / #CalBike.

I've been a little distracted with broad-spectrum DIY, but the British Human Power Club racing season kicks off at #Hillingdon on Saturday. Registrations close at midday tomorrow.

Our events are open to anyone over the age of 12, on anything that's human-powered and meets a minimal set of safety requirements.

Unfortunately, the camping pitches have now sold out, and late registrations aren't guaranteed a T-shirt (the order has now gone to the printers).

Medium-rate registration for the 2024 Human Powered Vehicle World Championship, at Betteshanger Park in Kent, UK on 16-18 of August, closes on Monday (after which prices go up, and you won't get a T-shirt).

Juniors (12-16) are half-price, and camping is available on site. Any kind of rider (you don't have to be an athlete) on any kind of human-powered vehicle (as long as it has a brake and no dangerous sharp bits) can take part. Spectators are welcome, free of charge.

We currently have 112 riders registered, but I'd really like to see more Women and Juniors on the list.

Early-bird registrations for the 2024 World Human Powered Vehicle Association championships (hosted by the British Human Power Club at Betteshanger Park in Kent, UK on 16-18th of August) are now open.

Pretty much anything exclusively human-powered with a rider over 12 years of age can take part - athleticism is strictly optional, and spectators are welcome.

Does anybody know of a better umbrella term than "non-standard bicycle" for all bikes that are not the "standard" shape? So including #recumbent bikes/trikes, #handcycle and other #adaptedbikes but also #cargobike #unicycle #tricycle etc

Some ideas if nothing exists already:
- altercycle
- laterocycle
- pretercycle
- teratocycle
- nothocycle

I want language to talk about how #bicycle storage infrastructure doesn't include bents, cargobikes, trikes, etc. #CyclingInfrastructure

@fbaum The first handcycle we saw in Monterey County was in 2010 or 2011, when we met Ed biking on the Monterey Bay Sanctuary Scenic Trail's City of Monterey section.

As we noted in our perennials post (where he's among those featured) https://bikemonterey.org/perennials-biking-monterey-county.html, Ed's career expertise demanded many working hours at the computer. That made those hours with his handcycle a very desirable way to keep life in balance! :)

Hey #biketooter as a #handcycle rider I often encounter cycling trails built to exclude. Here’s some ways to make our trails more inclusive:
- remove double D-shaped trail gates. Handcycles & recumbent trikes are tough to fit through and many can’t dismount to do so.
- Remove e-bike restrictions. Electric assist reduces barriers to cycling.
- Avoid gates or boulders that prevent trikes from entering
- Stairs and steps should never be part of a bike path/trail
