Hey, cyclists..

If you're cycling a road with double lines in the middle, I'm not able to overtake you NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU WAVE ME PAST AND YELL AT ME TO GO AROUND.

Especially especially when you're all riding 2 and 3 abreast.

Dont get shitty at me for not breaking the law.

#Transport for #London has published an interim guidance note on shared use bus stop boarders, outlining how these layouts should be planned and designed on #cycle routes. The note explains when Shared Use Bus Boarders (SUBBs) may be suitable, how they separate #cyclists from motor traffic and why they can encourage cycling by avoiding the need to overtake stationary buses. Monitoring suggests many cyclists prefer SUBBs, though accessibility groups have raised concerns about passengers crossing a cycle track to reach the bus. The guidance stresses local assessment, engagement and Equality Impact Assessments, as well as alignment with existing bus and #cycling design standards. It also reflects a government request to pause installations where passengers must board directly from a cycle track. #TfL plans further monitoring across London to understand user behaviour, accessibility impacts and how designs can be improved before final guidance is issued.
content.tfl.gov.uk/shared-use-

A document section titled '1 Introduction' discusses the Mayor's Transport Strategy to improve London's cycle network. It highlights road danger as a key barrier to cycling and introduces the Shared Use Bus Boarder (SUBB) as an alternative layout for separating cycle traffic from motor traffic past a bus stop, citing recent research showing high preference for SUBBs over cycling in the carriageway.A table titled "Table 1 – SUBB cycle flow and hour boarders and alighter flow considerations" shows four scenarios to determine suitability. The columns are: Scenario, Peak hour boarders and alighters, Peak hour one-way cycle flows, and Suitability? Scenarios 1 and 3 are marked "Yes*". Scenario 2 is marked "Yes* - if passenger flow goes into 'High' category (>450 per hour), not suitable". Scenario 4 is marked "No**". Footnotes indicate conditions for "Yes*" and "No**" regarding design context and alternative design.A diagram titled "Figure 1 – Recommended components of a with-flow SUBB" illustrates a segregated cycle track (coloured red/orange) adjacent to a main road. The cycle track is separated from the adjacent footway by a buffer strip containing a bus shelter (cantilever type) and bollards, and from the traffic lane by road markings, where a bus stop is situated with a 'Bus Stop' marking. Key dimensions and features are labelled, including recommended bus lane width (2.5m - 3.0m), recommended track width (1.5m - 2.5m), and absolute minimum clearances (1.0m and 1.5m). Details on cycle track flushness with the footway, cycle symbol markings location, contrasting colour requirement, tramline paving, road hump triangle markings, and a 1:20 gradient ramp are also shown.A page titled "5 Next steps" from an interim guidance note, detailing further monitoring by Transport for London and London boroughs on bus stop bypasses (SUBBs). The four required next steps are: verifying investment decisions via a robust understanding of SUBB impacts; comparing actual user interactions with predicted behaviours; understanding user attitudes and behaviours towards the bus stop area and cycling scheme; and addressing core impacts on mobility and visually impaired user groups, aligning with TfL's equality duty. This will inform future scheme development and training.

PSA: Attention #Canberra #Cyclists

The next four mornings are forecast to be *very cold* for this time of year - more likely early September weather. The forecast is for 6, 3, 5 and 8 in Tuggeranong and 7, 4, 7 and 9 at the airport.

So don’t ride expecting normal December mornings because you may need some of your winter gear.

#Transport for #London Have Your Say:
#TfL is consulting on plans to complete the missing 400-metre section of Barnham Drive in Thamesmead with a new link for #buses, #cyclists and pedestrians. The bus-only road would include a two-way cycle path, pavements, lighting, two shelters and a connection to the Newmarsh Road route. Parking would be banned along the whole road, and restrictions on general traffic would start after the two southern homes. The scheme supports wider regeneration and aims to give quicker links between west Thamesmead and the town centre, with improved access to schools, health services and transport hubs. Walking and cycling journeys would be shorter, while any loss of informal parking and vegetation clearance would be managed through mitigation. Feedback is open until 22 January 2026.

An overview map of Barnham Drive in Thamesmead, showing the road layout and surrounding area. The key indicates buildings (grey shapes), existing carriageway (thin grey lines), existing landscaping (light green areas), and the new carriageway (thick red line). The new carriageway is a single section of Barnham Drive, running from a junction near Battery Road and Hill View Drive, north-eastwards through a landscaped area, and connecting to a roundabout at Waterside Close and Newmarsh Road. The map also shows Discovery Primary School and part of the A2016 Central Way.A detailed engineering plan for Barnham Drive in Thamesmead, showing two sections of proposed road improvements. The key defines symbols for existing and new carriageway, footways, cycle tracks, road markings, landscaping, and more. The top section shows a straight stretch of Barnham Drive with a new continuous footway and a combined footway/cycle track running parallel, including a raised table crossing and access road layout. The bottom section shows the design for a roundabout where Barnham Drive meets Grasshaven Way, illustrating new road geometry, shared-use cycle track and footways, and a new pedestrian and cycle crossing on Grasshaven Way, all within a landscaped environment. An aerial satellite image overview map of Barnham Drive in Thamesmead. The map shows the urban and surrounding green/wooded areas. A thick red line highlights the section of Barnham Drive that is the focus of the scheme, running from a junction with Battery Road and Hill View Drive, north-eastwards through a residential area, and connecting to a large roundabout near Waterside Close and Newmarsh Road. Key landmarks visible are Discovery Primary School, Newmarsh Road, Waterside Close, and the A2016 Central Way.A document titled "Barnham Drive Environmental Summary" from Transport for London (TfL). The text summarises the potential environmental impacts of the new road link, which include increased Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) movements, noise, and dust during construction, which will be mitigated by a Code of Construction Practice. Other points cover the site being in a flood-prone area requiring sustainable drainage, the proposed site being on previously contaminated land and near historical landfill sites necessitating soil and groundwater testing and a waste management plan, and the removal of vegetation which will be subject to mitigation proposals and a Biodiversity Net Gain outcome. Finally, the summary notes that the road will be used by pedestrians, cyclists, and buses, potentially increasing noise near properties, and confirms an EIA screening exercise will be undertaken.

Champion Cyclist Against the Nazis by Alberto Toscano, 2020

The amazing story of champion cyclist Gino Bartali and how he helped save the lives of 800 Jews during World War II.
Italy, 1943. Although allied with Hitler, there were those who refused to accept the fascist policies of racial discrimination and deportation. Among them was Gino Bartali.

A champion cyclist, he won the Giro d'Italia (Tour of Italy) three times and the Tour de France twice. But these weren’t his only achievements. Deeply religious, Bartali never spoke about what he did during those dark years, when he agreed to work with the Resistance and pass messages from one end of the country to the other. Despite the dangers, Bartali used his training as a pretext to criss-cross Italy, hiding documents in the handlebars and saddle of his bicycle, all the while hoping that each time he was searched they wouldn't think to disassemble his machine.
As a result of his bravery, 800 Jews — including numerous children — were saved from deportation. He died in Florence in 2000 and was recognized as one of the 'Righteous Among the Nations' in 2013. In this book, Alberto Toscano shares the incredible story of this great sportsman and recalls the dramatic moments in Italy and Europe in the twentieth century.
Review
An informative testament to the kinds of risks and sacrifices the anti-Nazis in Mussolini's Italy during World War II...an extraordinary story of an extraordinary man in extraordinary times."

New data from #Transport for #London shows that the Mayor’s Direct Vision Standard (DVS) for HGVs has halved deaths and serious injuries among pedestrians, #cyclists, and motorcyclists. Since its introduction in 2019, the average number of people killed in collisions with HGVs has fallen from 17 per year (2017–2019) to 11, while those seriously injured dropped from 54 to 24 in 2024. The scheme, part of London’s Vision Zero plan, improves driver visibility and is backed by enforcement and safety upgrades. #TfL says the DVS is saving lives, with wider #EU adoption expected to prevent thousands of fatalities by 2038.

As evenings grow darker, the National #Transport Authority (NTA) and the Transport for #Ireland (TFI) Smarter #Travel Programme have launched the annual Light Up Your Bike campaign, running during the final week of October. The initiative reminds #cyclists of the importance of staying visible on the roads through the darker months. With shorter daylight and reduced visibility, cyclists face greater risks, so the campaign urges everyone to use both front and rear lights to stay safe. Partners of the Smarter Travel Programme can register for free bike lights ahead of the October Bank Holiday, when the clocks go back. This year’s campaign has grown, with 93 organisations registered and 25,000 lights distributed. NTA Interim CEO Hugh Creegan said: “As daylight fades, being visible is vital. We encourage cyclists to check their lights and stay safe this autumn and winter.” The programme promotes sustainable travel, including walking, cycling and public transport.
