#Durable and #Transparent: Researchers Develop #HighEfficiency #Bifacial #Perovskite #SolarCells

"Bifacial perovskite solar cells, which capture sunlight from both sides, have shown great potential for enhancing solar energy efficiency. Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) have recently advanced their development by introducing a novel NiO/Ag/NiO (NAN) transparent electrode. This innovation improves efficiency, durability, and infrared transparency, offering promising applications in solar energy technology.
"As detailed in the Journal of Photonics for Energy, a research team from IIT Dharwad designed and fabricated bifacial solar cells with high infrared transparency. They achieved this by integrating a hybrid top transparent electrode (TE) composed of a three-layer NiO/Ag/NiO structure. Using a low-energy physical vapor deposition technique, they developed an electrode with exceptionally low electrical resistance and high visible light transmittance, significantly enhancing the performance of these solar cells."

I'm not a laundry expert so I'm just going to throw this question out there: how is tying all my clothes into a daisy chain of tight knots highly efficient?
Based on the CO2 decay in our ~380sqft (~35m^2) utility building, I've calculated it has a natural ACH (not ACH50) of ~0.07.
Considering the building is still under construction, and the insulation + interior air barrier (walls and ceiling) isn't yet installed, I'm very happy with this.
Our goal is to make it as airtight as possible and then ventilation will be actively managed with a Lunos e2 HRV.

First insulation boards being installed. This is the first of two, 2” thick layers we’ll have.

We’re dodging the rain showers here in Vermont this weekend to try and get the sheathing installed. We’re using CDX plywood as part of our vapor-open wall assembly. The building is starting to take shape.
[Getting Rid Of] The Ghost In the LED
Multiplexing is a very old technology in which control signals are intermixed for the sake of being able to control more devices than there are control signals. For [mihai.cuciuc], the problems started when he multiplexed some very efficient LED's, and it's all well described on his Hackaday.io page.
The problem? In two banks of six LEDs each, both LEDs connected to a single Arduino pin would light, even when only one bank was turned on at the ground side. The LED In the bank that was switched on lit brightly, and its corresponding LED in the bank that was off would also be very dimly lit. [mihai] was able to determine that the problem was not due to a leaky transistor, but rather due to a quality of the LED's themselves.
What is an LED but a diode, and it's well known that diodes also have capacitance. In fact, this quality is exploited in varactor diodes, a specialty diode whose capacitance can be changed by varying the voltage on the cathode. [mihai] deduced that this capacitance was causing current to flow in the bank that was off. Where was the current going? From the Arduino pin that was on, through its attached LED, and then into the rest of the bank of LED 's, charging them like capacitors. [mihai] hasn't seen this before, but theorizes that for the latest batch of high efficiency LED's, this minute current is enough to light the LED through which the current is flowing.
[mihai]'s solution is an elegant hack which he's made available for your perusal. You might also enjoy this introduction to diode basics by W2AEW. If you have any great diode or LED hacks of your own, be sure to drop us a line!
