You won't be surprised that I eagerly watch James Hoffmann's videos. Especially the "if you were to plan some small experiment on your own - WITH COFFEE!" videos are really good.

So his new test of the "delay your morning " hypothesis was right down my street!

One thing I was wondering and which was not discussed in the comments I managed to read:
Were the data analysed in a way that took nesting / into account?

While I love the smart smart speed of Overcast I was just listening to a podcast by @hubermanlab where he mentioned that there is some evidence that (pauses improve learning)[overcast.fm/+2-B-zhE2U/36:34]

This felt like it hit the head on something I've noticed, which is that when listening to some podcasts with smart silence and a bit of speed boost it might be super interesting but at the end I don't remember much of what was said.

And it just hit me, I wonder if it would be beneficial to combine the two things, reduces silences to speed up, but injects artificial pauses every now and then to allow for more efficient learning?

Is this something you'd be interested in implementing @marcoarment ?

There does not seem to be any clear research on how long the pauses need to be, the paper Huberman referred did 10s training and 10s pauses improved muscle memory notably but that's not really relevant for remembering stuff in a podcast. Also it's hard to know when to pause, it would need to be after an enough content has been presented when some quick reflection would be beneficial.

Now when I write it down, it seems like an app can't possibly pause at the right moment.. so maybe the feature would be to add a pause-10s feature which auto-resumes 10s after being paused.

But how would it know if you want to pause for real or just to let your brain think about what you just heard?

Oh well, dumping it here for someone smarter to maybe figure something out :-)

RE: and the .

I've given advice to tens of millions of people since 1995 (via @PsychCentral), written hundreds upon hundreds of advice articles. Most people have never heard of me.

And that's by design. It's never been about me. It's about getting help for your mental health & better understanding .

(And I certainly never juggled 6 women & lie to them all at the same time. That's just gross & disrespectful.)

Dr. Lisa Feldman Barrett, Ph.D., a Distinguished Professor of Psychology at Northeastern University who is a world expert in the science of emotions. She explains what emotions are and how the brain represents and integrates signals from our body and the environment around us to create our unique emotional states. We discuss the relationship between emotions and language, how our specificity of language impacts our emotional processing, the role of facial expressions in emotions, and how emotions relate to sleep, movement, nutrition and the building and reinforcement of social bonds. We also discuss actionable tools for how to regulate feelings of uncertainty and tools to better understand the emotional states of others.

I thoroughly enjoyed Barretts book; How Emotions Are Made - The Secret Life of The Brain, its a gem among popular science books. The book shifts your perspective and add volume to your knowledge. She does a great work at cleaning up bad science and clarifying the new science, removing old beliefs and explaining the latest research. This podcast is a great view into how her book is layered out, what it teaches and, not least, how understandable and sensible the information is.
The clear way she explains things is delightful to listen to. She is also a guest who really display authority through her science, demonstrated neatly as one of the few who make Andrew Huberman go quiet and into full listening mode 😀
