I had an idea for a legal-psychological thriller where a popular, well-loved Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court is assassinated. Assassin is caught, given death penalty. Case goes through court system, appeal ends up at the Supreme Court. It's a complex case involving insanity defense, terrorism, hate crime, etc.

Would require far more legal background than I have or want.
