In 'Seasonality and schismogenesis', social anthropologist #ThomasWidlok draws on longterm fieldwork with Hai//om people of northern Namibia, envisaging an ‘indigenous critique’ of two key themes: oscillatory switches framed by seasonality, and ‘schismogenesis’. He calls these ‘doing seasons’ and ‘doing difference’. Doing seasons without ‘unruly switching’, Hai//om indigenous voice critiques the structuralist/dualist seasonal perspective in #TheDawnofEverything ‘coloured by agricultural folks in the high latitude zones’. Life histories collected from Hai//om seniors also provide the opposite of ‘doing difference’ – that is, ‘undoing difference’, when they describe living with !Xû neighbours as ‘children of one woman’.

Omfg. Once again, flawed logic, disinformation, and outright malice rule. What a disgusting display of continued subjugation. I guess the lesson is: never underestimate the allure of actively ignoring an obvious inequity in favor of maintaining the status quo. FVCK!

#Australia was, in some periods of its history, renowned for being resistant to bullshit and lies.

I had hoped today we would come together and #VoteYes to show ourselves better than the torrent of fear, racism, small-minded hatred, and sheer dismissal of Indigenous people.

We failed today, and I'm sorry. I hope we can prove better soon.

Take care with the early figures coming out of the #IndigenousVoice referendum.

These are largely rural booths, which we expect will lean towards No.

The urban booths will take a bit longer, and may take a bit longer to come through.

Reminder: A majority across #Australia, and a majority in at least 4 states, must vote Yes for a constitutional referendum to pass.

And now polls are closing in Australia's east coast in the #IndigenousVoice referendum.

It's Double Democracy Day in #ANZ!

There is a general election in #NewZealand. Polls are already open and will close at 19:00 NZST (07:00 BST).

There's also the #IndigenousVoice referendum in #Australia. Polls will be open from 08:00 to 18:00 local time (polls close between 08:00 and 10:00 BST).

I plan to #VoteYes because that aligns me with the overwhelming majority of Indigenous people.

The people who were consulted, for many years; who designed this #VoiceTreatyTruth process; the people who designed this constitutional amendment now.

They want an #IndigenousVoice, there's been plenty of investigation of the risks and the benefits, and the case is clear.

I'm not going to tell the overwhelming majority of Indigenous people consulted, that I know better than them on what they need. I will #VoteYes.

#AusPol

Mostly though, I accept that a constitutional amendment is needed, for one reason:

The Indigenous peoples that crafted this process *from its inception*, to the referendum now, are *telling me* this is what they need.

And I'm in no position to tell them they don't need a constitutional amendment to get an #IndigenousVoice. They deserve recognition in our constitution, they designed this process to get it.

Plenty enough to convince me to #VoteYes.

Why is a constitutional amendment needed; why isn't this being introduced with a law, like other laws?

For those who don't yet know: It's because we need the #IndigenousVoice to be part of the constitution, *before* it can be legislated in detail, and so that a simple change of law can't erase it.

> Putting the Voice in the constitution means it can always be improved but never thrown away.
> Putting the Voice in the Constitution protects it from politics, giving it the time, security, and independence that it needs to provide meaningful and honest advice.
