Chief Maquinna (also transliterated: Muquinna, Macuina, Maquilla) was the Chief of the Nuuchahnulth People of #NootkaSound, during the heyday of the maritime fur trade in the 1780s and 1790s, on the #PacificNorthwest Coast.

British explorer #CaptainCook went looking (like so many #Europeans before and after him)or the Northwest Passage. He ran headlong into a thriving trade and business culture on the west coast, overseen by young Nuu-chah-nulth, Chief Maquinna.

The two men's encounter would forever change trans-Pacific trade and teach the European empire a lesson in diplomacy, they've managed to forget, many times over.

*The #Saugeen #FirstPeoples won their lawsuit 👏 Appeals court dismissed #Ontario government's appeal. Justice was finally served.*

Ontario's top court has upheld a lower court's ruling that a strip of #SaubleBeach, a popular Ontario tourist spot, has always belonged to a local #FirstNation.

In a 121-page decision on Monday, the Ontario Court of Appeal dismissed appeals brought by the Municipality of South #BrucePeninsula, the Ontario government, and several local families to the April 2023 ruling by Superior Court Justice Susan Vella.

"Justice was done today," said Saugeen First Nation Chief Conrad Ritchie in a statement, calling it a "powerful moment" for the Saugeen community.

In her 2023 decision, Vella ruled that "Chi-Cmiinh," a roughly two-kilometre strip of beach at the northern end of Saugeen Reserve No. 29, had always belonged to Chippewas of Saugeen First Nation, and that the federal government breached its treaty rights.

The Crown, Vella wrote, failed to protect and preserve the #treaty it signed in 1854, Treaty 72, in which the First Nation and neighbouring #Chippewas of Nawash surrendered Saugeen Peninsula, excluding five #Indigenous reserve territories. One would become #ReserveNo29.

A visit to #Olympia with a grace note in an alley off Capitol Way. There was no credit nor translation I could find, but the word "st’əč’ás", from the #Lushotseed or Puget Sound #Salish language, transfers into standard English as "Stechass" or "Steh-Chass". It denotes some of the First Peoples who lived here, a long-gone village of theirs, & the area of today's Budd Inlet. The figurative elements of this mural use and adaption of the ovoid, highly abstracted graphical language of Northwest Coast First People's art. A very tall, aggressive-looking, humanoid creature in black and white, wearing a red hat, walks behind what may be a deer or elk and a few water birds and marine animals. A large body of water and distant hills form the background. A white, worried or frightened sun or moon face overlooks the scene.

The continuation of the mural still has a background of vast water, but the sky is in warm orange and yellow tones, not cool blue, and the hills are gone. A large fish emerges from the water and faces the walking humanoid approaching it. A crab, flying bird, and another jumping fish seem to witness the scene. People in canoes with hats woven from grass or other plant material travel in canoes, approaching the center. One of them stands at the shore, gesturing for the others to make land or signaling his intention to speak.

Postcard from Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center in Discovery Park in #Seattle. Hadn't been here in ages and never saw the building and its beautiful art from the inside, but today it was open to visitors. I have no idea what I'm really looking at as I contemplate the complex, layered artworks here. One of them is completely abstract to me, yet intriguing, and the others seem to tell stories of peace-seeking and, at another time, of living in safe harmony.

I honestly have no idea what I'm looking at there. It's imposing, dramatic, intense art. A large relief sculpture made from painted wood appears to show maybe the sun and moon, and maybe an abstraction of progress, time, human creativity, history.

A large wall panel carved and painted in the black and red ovoid style of the First Peoples in the Pacific Northwest shows a tutelary or protective entity or spirit, whose countenance comprises representations of salmon, guarding or observing a house in which a humanoid or ursine person faces the viewer with paws or hands raised and with a kind of wistful smile.

An oil-on-canvas painting shows five life-size, relative naturalistic representations of standing tribal representatives in distinct, festive, formal-looking clothing, apparently in deep deliberation and conversation. One of them studies what's written on a large paper, which is maybe what they're dealing with. Superimposed on the mountains in the background one sees shapes of corn, and in front of these are silhouettes of people fighting, a longhouse, other people seemingly waiting. In the pale sky, you can barely see celestial symbols, a fish, a frog, and several pitcher-like items.

GENEVA -- "The #coal and #GoldMining in Russia has driven #IndigenousPeoples from their homes and poisoned their rivers. In Nicaragua, the assassinations and imprisonment of #LandDefenders has fractured families and communities, presenters told the United Nations Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

"In Algeria, the people have barely survived 3,000 years of violent #colonization and #genocide.
'Other people should not undergo what we have experienced – which is the case now in #Palestine,' said the representative from the Algeria Association, Learned Society of scientific research, religious and mystical bodies. Describing the genocide in Algeria, he said France has thousands of bones and craniums of the people in French museums.

"An Indigenous woman from #Khakassia Republic in Siberia described the coal and gold mining: 'Coal is mined, despite mass protests, the government used land, private property for this, and citizens were driven out of their homes.' Now, she said, the conditions are no longer good for livestock breeding, which is their way of life.

"'The government is only interested in the presence of natural resources -- but we are a resource ourselves,' she told the #UnitedNations.

"'Our language is disappearing, and we only have one school in the republic where the language is taught. We are #Khakas but we do not govern #Khakassia.'

"'Nothing has been done to protect our land. The main priority is the mining for materials.'

"'I also note the #Shors are suffering from gold mining, they have territory for traditional nature management created by the Republic of Khakassia, traditionally they are fishers and hunters and so on.'

"'However, companies are #polluting rivers, and this water should be used for vital needs. This water flows through villages, however it is polluted, but companies do not put an end to their activities."

More than 50 members of an uncontacted #IndigenousTribe have been photographed on a riverbank in the remote #Peruvian #Amazon near an area where #logging companies have been granted concessions by the country's government.

The large group from the #MashcoPiro appeared in recent days near the southeastern village of #MonteSalvado, which belongs to the #Yine people. A smaller group of 17 appeared near a neighboring village.

The Yine, who speak a language related to that of the Mashco Piro, have previously reported that the #UncontactedTribe has been angry about the presence of #loggers on their land, according to the #IndigenousRights group #SurvivalInternational.

“This is irrefutable evidence that many Mashco Piro live in this area, which the government has not only failed to protect, but actually sold off to logging companies,” Alfredo Vargas Pio, president of the local Indigenous rights group #FENAMAD, said in a statement from Survival International.

Thanks for sharing! It seems that at least in recent years, #Aotearoa has done a better job of recognizing and supporting its #FirstPeoples. When I visited the #Hualien in #Taiwan, our guide said that the Indigenous peoples in that region shared a lot of DNA and cultural/language characteristics with the #māori including a custom of facial tattoos.
