Looks like Garmin reacted to the shitstorm they faced regarding new inReach plans. Now they want to keep a “suspend” option next to “enabled”.
This way I would even save some money.
Don’t say protests don’t work!
Do I have people using a Garmin Inreach device among my followers?
I have a question about the subscription part: can you pay only for the months in which you need the device, or do you have to keep paying once the subscription is activated?
And if you stop paying and want to restart paying, do you have to pay the activation cost again?

Das kann ja noch spaßig werden wenn mehr und mehr Smartphones direkt mit Satelliten kommunizieren können... 😬

Hmm my #Garmin #DeLorme #InReach Explorer is not wanting to connect via USB cable to my computer. I've had this device for about a decade. Perhaps I'm getting close to needing to upgrade. The USB port might be going bad for data transfer.
I've got a new USB micro cable on the way to make sure it's not the cable being problematic.
Occasionally it fails to send tracking points and I've had to re-sync it a couple of times over the years.
Do I buy another InReach device or ???

#Garmin have made a quiet change to their #InReach satellite communicator / #EPIRB plans. The new plans have several serious disadvantages for users, and are significantly more expensive than the existing ones.
*** DO NOT CHANGE YOUR EXISTING CONTRACT. ***
You can remain on your existing plan, but as soon as you change, you CANNOT swap back.
Note this applies to all InReach accounts worldwide, including in Australia.
Screw you, Garmin.
Garmin has restructured the InReach plans.

Annual plans are gone. Monthly plans retain their prices while offering more features (e.g. more text messages).
What's the catch? Plans can no longer be suspended. You can either cancel (and be subject to an expensive reactivation fee when you resubscribe), or drop to the cheap, new pay-as-you-go Enabled plan.
Overall, seems like a win for me personally.
Used the SOS button on my #Garmin #InReach for the first time. Fortunately (for me) not for me, but to get a helicopter for a Polish hiker, who broke his leg on the shore of the river next to the hut (Hadlaskard) in the middle of #Hardangervidda.
Fuck you you fucking fuckity fucks.
I swear if I ever have a developer do this for a website I own and are hiring them to work on, their ass will be on FUCKING FIRE.
Give the FUCKING OPTION to explain what happened, don't just go "welp! Your'e fucked!"
I have no problems with public shaming. This is Garmin's Inreach login page.
I've had some time to take the Garmin InReach Mini 2 out for a bit of a spin, mostly just using it as a regular GPS to track my motorcycle rides.
One of the unexpectedly fantastic features is that it can automatically synchronise waypoints and recorded tracks to and from the Garmin Explore app on my phone. From there, I can also export them to GPX format and use them in any other app.
This is *significantly* better than transferring to/from my old GPSMap 64s over Mini USB.
My Garmin InReach Mini 2 arrived.
Initial impressions are really positive. It's solid, compact, and light. Perfect for clipping to your gear with the included carabiner (couldn't do that with my GPSMap 64s).
At this stage, my only complaint is that the buttons are hard to press and their positions make it awkward to use with one hand - but I suppose that's the trade-off for small size. It's no substitute for a regular GPS, and it's not supposed to be.
Thanks for everyone's feedback on the Garmin InReach.
After looking over the competitors available here in Aus, and PLBs, I settled on the InReach Mini 2. It's expensive, but I like the compact size and features. Compared to a PLB, I want to have the option of contacting family to come get me in a non-emergency situation, like a bike breakdown outside of cell reception.
Should be good. Soon I'll be able to hit the 4WD trails alone for some practice.
Has anyone tried Garmin InReach for SMS messaging and (just in case) emergency help?
I've been thinking about getting one for motorcycle adventure riding since I discovered I get absolutely no cell reception in some remote areas. God forbid I should stack it in the middle of nowhere without cell reception, I wouldn't be able to call for help. 😬
Seems like the InReach would solve that. It's not cheap, but better than being stuck.
@ingalls @mikemccaffrey I had this problem recently camping in Oregon. I started seeing smoke and orange skies. I couldn’t receive any AM/FM broadcast radio stations. Couldn’t reach any #AmateurRadio repeaters with my mobile rig running 50W. I could hear USFS traffic on my scanner but nothing fire related (which made me feel somewhat better).
In the end I texted my brother with my Garmin #InReach and asked him to look up fire info in my area. Luckily was clear but not really sure what I’d have done otherwise.
