"Most researchers would receive more recognition if assessed by article-level metrics than by journal-level metrics."
journals.plos.org/plosbiology/

PS: It's important to add that article-level metrics are preferable anyway. This is true whether we use citation metrics to measure impact or misuse them to measure quality.

"We present DAFNEE, a database of academia-friendly journals in ecology, evolutionary biology and archaeology (dafnee.isem-evolution.fr/). DAFNEE includes information on over 600 journals (co)run by academic or non-profit institutions, aiming at helping to keep publishing funds within the academic community. The database details these journal’s business models, article processing charges, citation rates and partnerships. We show that DAFNEE journals compare favourably to non-DAFNEE ones in terms of editorial and financial policy, while offering similar citation rates."
academic.oup.com/jeb/advance-a

PS: I like this idea and hope that researchers in other fields will work on their own versions. The job could be done badly. But if done well, the big plus is that promotion and tenure committees would have (new) good reasons to shift to more academic-friendly criteria and away from a narrow focus on brand, prestige, and metrics like impact factor.

Update. This new study confirms those above by showing that "low-JIF [journal impact factor] journals are often primary sources for much applied work of narrow regional or taxonomic interest essential for successful intervention on the ground."

PS: I repeat, cockeyed emphasis on high-JIF publication is another factor endangering species.

"#Delta moves toward eliminating set prices in favor of #AI that determines how much you personally will pay for a ticket."
fortune.com/2025/07/16/delta-m

PS: Lots to hate here. But suppose the model spreads to other industries. (Yes, this is sci-fi for now. But let your imagination run free.) Imagine that academic #publishers used this model to set #APCs. What would AI tools infer from your institutional affiliation (about available resources), first name (about gender), surname (about ethnicity), submitted manuscript (about guesstimated quality), and past publications (about specialization, reputation, impact)? What odd variables would it factor in, such as the number of Trump-banned words (for political protection) or the number of citations to that journal (for #JIF)? How would it use all this information? Would it lower the #APC for you, to bring you in, or raise it, to price you out?

For airlines or journals, would there be any reason to stick with the model if it didn't raise net revenues?

Excellent: "More than 100 institutions and funders worldwide have confirmed that research published in #eLife continues to be considered in hiring, promotion, and funding decisions, following the journal’s bold move to forgo its Journal Impact Factor."
elifesciences.org/for-the-pres

PS: This is not just a step to support eLife, but a step to break the stranglehold of bad metrics in research assessment. For the same reason, it's a step toward more honest and less simplistic assessment.

Am Bistro mat der woxx #324 – Wisou Logement ee feministescht Thema ass

All Woch bitt d’woxx Iech an hirem Podcast en Abléck an hir journalistesch Aarbecht a beliicht d’Hannergrënn vun engem Artikel.

De Wunnengsproblem zu Lëtzebuerg ass grouss – eng Tatsaach, där sech déi meescht Leit wuel bewosst sinn. Wéineger bekannt ass awer, datt de Logement och ee feministescht Thema ass. Wisou dat esou ass, erkläert d’Tatiana Salvan an dëser Episod vum woxx-Podcast. Et geet ëm Diskriminéierung, Lounënnerscheeder an d’Fro, wat d’Politik ënnerhëlt. Ausserdeem stelle mir d’Fuerderunge vun der Plattform JIF, déi de Logement dëst Joer zu engem vun hiren Haapttheme gemaach huet, méi genee vir.

Den Artikel, iwwert deen mir geschwat hunn: Le logement, source d’inégalités entre les sexes

New study: More than one-third of public health #journals (33.7%) do not ask authors for data-sharing statements. Those that do request data-sharing statements are more likely to be #OpenAccess, high in #JIF, published in the UK, or endorsers of the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (#CONSORT).

Note that "the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (#ICMJE) require[s] that all papers submitted after July 1, 2018, must include a data-sharing statement."

Update. Confirming the study above, a new study finds that when new #species are added to the endangered species list, the research documenting the danger comes much more often from low-JIF journals than from high-JIF journals. The authors call for new impact metrics to take this into account.
nature.com/articles/d41586-025
(#paywalled)

PS: There are two related conclusions here. Academic incentives for high-JIF publications lead scientists away from research that might help save endangered species. Helping save endangered species is an important kind of impact that fails to register on prevailing impact metrics.

"Sneaked references are references registered in the metadata of publications without being listed in reference section or in the full text of the actual publications where they ought to be found. We document here 80,205 references sneaked in metadata of the International Journal of Innovative Science and Research Technology (#IJISRT). These sneaked references are registered with Crossref and all cite -- thus benefit -- this same journal."

Authors get another publication for their resumes, perhaps a PubMed-indexed publication. If it's a #commentary, not a research article, they needn't do any new research. Journals get an #APC, citations to game their impact factor (#JIF), or both.

The most used impact factor is the Journal Impact Factor (#JIF) of Web of Science (there's also others, like the CiteScore of Scopus). To determine a journal's JIF, Web of Science takes the number of times that papers are cited in the past two years, divided by the total number of papers in the past two years. To do this, obviously, the journal has to exist at least two years, but Web of Science additionally requires the journal to exist for at least one year to be considered.

Several researchers contacted us with the question if IRRJ will get an impact factor. We understand that some universities require young researchers to publish in journals with an impact factor, for instance for tenure tracks and other career advancements. IRRJ plans to become a appealing journal for young researchers at such universities too, and we will do our best of be assigned an impact factor. #JIF #WebOfScience

Benford's law is weird & fascinating.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benford%

I have no idea what to make of its appearance here.

The authors' take: "The rate of increase in [non-OA] journals is much higher than that of OA journals…[&] violations of Benford's Law are more frequent in [non-OA] journals compared to open [OA] journals.
