Dyfed‑Powys Police respond after mass shooting in Australia
Police pledge vigilance
A spokesperson for the force said:
“We are deeply saddened to hear of the events that have been reported from Australia, and our thoughts are with all those affected, particularly members of the Jewish community. We will continue to monitor any tensions in our area closely. Local teams will be engaging with different groups, businesses, and key individual networks throughout Dyfed‑Powys to provide reassurance to the community.”
What happened in Sydney
On Sunday evening, December 14, gunmen opened fire during a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach in Sydney. Sixteen people were killed, including one of the attackers, and more than 40 others were injured. Authorities confirmed the Jewish community was deliberately targeted in what Australian police described as a terrorist incident.
Local reassurance
Dyfed‑Powys Police emphasised that while the tragedy took place thousands of miles away, they are determined to ensure people across Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire, Powys and Ceredigion feel safe and supported. Officers will be engaging with local groups, businesses and networks to provide visible reassurance and to listen to any concerns.
The force said it would continue to work closely with partners to monitor tensions and maintain public confidence.

My heart is heavy today 🕯️❤️ - Bondi Beach, a celebration of light and community — a Hanukkah gathering — was shattered by violence in an act described as terrorism targeting people for who they are. Innocent lives were lost, and many were wounded in scenes no celebration should ever know. My thoughts are with the families, the Jewish community, and all those affected by this horror.
Even in darkness, we must remember the strength of compassion. Human connection, the simple acts of kindness, the courage of those who helped others — these are the threads that bind us. I sip my tea ☕🐈 and hold in my heart the hope that light — like the flames of Chanukah candles and candles we light in memory tonight 🕯️ — can shine through hate.

Meir Maisis is one of them, as the 91-year-old ‘keyholder’ of the #cemetery, a retired textiles and housewares #merchant and student of #Greekphilosophy who has walked between the graves for so many decades that even the turtles that live there, he says, “recognise my voice”.
A two-time president of the local Jewish community, Maisis spent the last decade of the 20th Century working to restore hundreds of the graves; he has written four books on the city’s #Jewishcommunity and regularly gives tours of the cemetery.
He describes his work as a vocation given to him by God, as his life’s “destination”.

“The terminology for me is always [to] say it’s #Jewish communities,” Voloj said. “There’s not something like the #Jewishcommunity. So even if you have two #Hasids, they might not agree on anything. If you’re a #Satmar or if you’re #Chabad, I mean, there’s very different philosophies.”
Voloj said that there has also been a lot of excitement and emotional responses to Hyphen.
“I feel like what people can relate to, it’s personal #stories. So one #story is about a woman that grew up in #India, but she’s also like a single mom,” Voloj said. “Her son moves to #Israel, and she decided to just follow him. So it’s like basically a story about motherhood,”
The fact that Hyphen is a #comic has also helped to broaden its appeal.
“It’s such an #American thing and such an intergenerational thing,” Voloj said. “We had the #JCC events, there were some people who were over 60. And there the youngest persons were under 10.”
