In today's Lodi Wine post (lodiwine.com/blog/Further-proo), Rippey Family's 2025 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition Sweepstake award (for "best red wine" in the entire judging) is further proof that Grenache absolutely sings in Lodi's Mediterranean climate, especially as appreciation for lighter, purer, floral, spice scented red wines increases.

The differences in this account and the canonized one? This one focuses on Joseph's personal forgiveness and there is much less from God about the apostate world, since Joseph has already concluded there wasn't a true church, while this conclusion is given by good in the later account. Also a huge glaring difference is only one divine being is mentioned (the Lord), not two, which interestingly is consistent with Joseph's understanding and teaching on the godhead during this time. #josephsmith

“the Lord heard my cry in the wilderness and while in the attitude of calling upon the Lord in the 16th year of my age a piller of fire light above the brightness of the sun at noon day come down from above and rested upon me and I was filled with the spirit of god and the Lord opened the heavens upon me and I saw the Lord and he spake unto me saying ‘Joseph my son thy sins are forgiven thee’” – First Recorded Account of the First Vision, Joseph Smith Jr Journal, 1832

The 1832 account is the earliest known version, written in Joseph Smith’s own handwriting 12 years after the event and there is no other contemporary record from anyone. It was written in a letterbook but never publicly known until the 1960s. This version was removed from the letterbook and hidden in a safe when Joseph Fielding Smith first found it because it was so strange.

“by searching the scriptures I found that mankind did not come unto the Lord but that they had apostatised from the true and living faith and there was no society or denomination that built upon the gospel of Jesus Christ as recorded in the New Testament” – First Recorded Account of the First Vision, Joseph Smith Jr Journal, 1832

Hinckley says he's not worried that Joseph Smith's multiple versions of his First Vision. He dismisses these different versions of the vision without ever mentioning any differences in the accounts. His goal is calming members who have heard of these strange accounts, and hope they will not look at them.

“To me the gospel is not a great mass of theological jargon. It is a simple and beautiful and logical thing, with one quiet truth following another in orderly sequence. I do not fret over the mysteries… I am not worried that the Prophet Joseph Smith gave a number of versions of the first vision” – President Gordon B. Hinckley, as Second Counselor in the First Presidency, November 1983 | First Presidency Message, October 1984 Ensign

wasmormon.org/joseph-smith-was The church denied the strange magic practices of Joseph's Smith. Facts they now claim were commonplace. The church apologists yearn to dismiss the practices as astrology or gambling today, but does that make them better? They denied Joseph was involved and that he used his seer stone for treasure digging out translation.

LDS Historian, Richard Bushman concedes that Joseph Smith was looking for treasure. He argues that this was “part of a culture found virtually everywhere,” “something like reading astrological charts today—a little goofy but harmless,” “too commonplace to be scandalous,” “too common in the nineteenth century for it to invalidate Joseph Smith,” because, he states “folk traditions and religion blend.”

Interestingly enough, after Joseph was tried for using his seer stone while digging for treasure and being found a fraud, he allegedly found the gold plates with his seer stone, and translated then with his seer stone. The text of the Book of Mormon includes multiple references to this concept of slippery treasures. It seems Joseph could have easily written in this as validation to his digging for treasure.

Book of Mormon Anachronisms – Slippery Treasures and Treasure Digging Concepts

The Smith family and other treasure seekers believed that enchantments on buried treasure had the power to move the location of the treasure under the earth so that those seeking the hidden valuables could not acquire them. These were called slippery treasures.

Benjamin Franklin on Treasure Seeking Seers. Franklin saw the folly and called it out as the “most egregious folly and madness.”

The church denied Joseph’s involvement with treasure digging until the evidence was no longer possible to refute or ignore. There is no doubt today that Joseph Smith was deeply involved with treasure digging.

Joseph Fielding Smith reasons that if it’s not true, the claims of the church should be exposed!

In other words, if it can be destroyed by the truth, it deserves to be destroyed by the truth.

Church Stands or Falls with Joseph Smith
Mormonism, as it is called, must stand or fall on the story of Joseph Smith. He was either a prophet of God, divinely called, properly appointed and commissioned, or he was one of the biggest frauds this world has ever seen. There is no middle ground.

If Joseph Smith was a deceiver, who wilfully attempted to mislead the people, then he should be exposed; his claims should be refuted, and his doctrines shown to be false, for the doctrines of an impostor cannot be made to harmonize in all particulars with divine truth. If his claims and declarations were built upon fraud and deceit, there would appear many errors and contradictions, which would be easy to detect.
