Joy Division haben im Laufe ihrer kurzen Karriere zwei Peel Sessions aufgenommen, beide im Jahr 1979 und der Zufall wollte es, dass ich die letzte Session zuerst vorstelle. Sie wurde am 26.11.1979 in den Maida Vale Studios in London aufgenommen und am 10.12.1979 gesendet. Joy Division nahmen vier Lieder auf, die sie bis dahin nur live gespielt hatten und von denen noch keine Studioaufnahmen existierten. Das hatten sie bei der ersten Peel Session auch so gehandhabt. Die Songs der zweiten Session waren „Twenty-Four Hours“, „Colony“, „Sound Of Music“ und „Love Will Tear Us Apart“. Produziert wurde die Session von ihrem Manager Tony Wilson (1950 – 2007), der auch Inhaber des legendären Labels Factory Records war. Veröffentlicht wurde die Peel Session 1987 auf dem eigenen Label von John Peel, Strange Fruit Records.
„Love Will Tear Us Apart“ und „Twenty-Four Hours“ bilden die A-Seite der EP, „Colony“ und „Sound Of Music“ die B-Seite. „Love Will Tear Us Apart“ blieb ein Non-Album-Track, die Versionen der 7″- und 12″-Singles wurden am 08.01.1980 und Anfang März 1980 neu aufgenommen. „Twenty-Four Hours“ und „Colony“ kamen auf das zweite Album „Closer“, das in der zweiten März-Hälfte aufgenommen wurde, dabei sang Ian Curtis auch „Love Will Tear Us Apart“ neu ein. „The Sound Of Music“ schließlich schaffte es in der Aufnahme vom 08.01.1980 auf die Compilation „Still“, auf der alle unveröffentlichten Studioaufnahmen sowie das letzte Konzert von Joy Division vom 02.05.1980 und einige weitere Liveaufnahmen zu finden sind. „Still“ erschien am 09.10.1981, genau wie „Love Will Tear Us Apart“ (Juni 1980) und „Closer“ (18.07.1980) postum, denn Sänger Ian Curtis nahm sich am 18.05.1980 das Leben, am Vortag der geplanten Abreise für ihre erste USA-Tour. Er wurde nur 23 Jahre alt.
Bernhard Sumner (Gitarre und Keyboards), Peter Hook (Bass) und Stephen Morris (Schlagzeug) machten als New Order weiter, unterstützt von Morris‘ Freundin und späteren Ehefrau Gillian Gilbert (Keyboards und Synthesizers).

This time we focus on the #Xer generation
Joy Division, “Exercise One” from Still, 1981 (Posthumous)
So my thought here is A) The title contains “xer” - haha, ain’t I clever - and B) #JoyDivision and the whole spectrum of #PostPunk hit just as the first GenXers were coming of age.
While Joy Division flickered only briefly in their dark world until Ian Curtis left us, the stark landscapes they left behind endure.
