#Kaval

2025-07-26

I've just received an email about prof. Lyuben Dossev being interested in compiling biographies of international Bulgarian/Thracian #kaval players (outside of Bulgaria/of non-Bulgarian descent). Questions include information about learning, performing, teaching, anecdotes, etc.
I'm happy to forward the email if interested. #Ethnomusicology

Rehearsing for tomorrow’s concert (Saturday) in Bimhuis, Amsterdam. We’ve included an older tune called Bones in the set, featuring some conch shells and an Ethiopian washint flute

It's probably no secret that I love Bulgarian #kaval.
Here's Kiril Belezhkov, who was my teacher for a while, performing a set of melodies by Dragan Karapchanski. The melodies start with a section in kaba. Kaba is a technique that only works on rim-blown #flutes where you essentially force the #flute to play the lowest octave fundamental and various overtones simultaneously, resulting in a very full and expressive sound. Some kavals do this easier than others, but even so, some professional players never find kaba. All the micro adjustments to embouchure and breath for finding the sound, and then for each note, are simply impossible to describe, thus teach.
After the kaba section he goes into more normal playing in the 2nd and 3rd registers. All of it is performed with great techniques, such as hlopki (lit. bells; switching between alternate fingerings for the same note) and exceptional finger-vibrato. #ethnomusicology #Bulgaria #music #organology #WorldMusic

Just ended up browsing through stuff. This is such a wonderful epic #performance of "Gypsy dance" By Theodosii Spassov (#composer, Bulgarian #kaval, vocals) with Vlatko Stefanovski (electric #guitar) and the Skopje Philharmonic #orchestra. I should add that IMHO Theodosii will always be the kaval master magician musician. #music #LiveMusic #ethnomusicology #WorldMusic

This is Gorata Zboruva by Stojance Kostovski. The piece is played on #Macedonian #kaval; a long end-blown #flute typically associated with shepherds in the #Balkans and #Anatolia, but now #folk #music. The main flute plays the #melody while a 2nd provides a #drone by means of circular breathing, thereby creating an effect similar to #bagpipes.
Similar flutes and traditions can be found around the #Mediterranean, illustrating a longstanding cultural exchange in the region.
