Kent Beck's tale is a thrilling ride through the riveting world of... cognitive decline? šŸ¤” Apparently, his brain needed an exoskeleton because aging is hard, folks. But don't worry, the magic of augmented coding is here to save him from the existential crisis of using a computer. šŸ’»āœØ

I confess to have never written a single line of code using AI (and only used it for proofreading a couple of times).

Having read what Kent Beck has written regarding his experience with ā€œaugmented codingā€ using the ā€œgenieā€ there’s an interesting case to be made.

When your brain becomes less willing to put up with the boilerplatey part of coding but you still very much love doing it maybe AI will help bring the joy back.

Hi All,

As you may know, I’m writing a 7-part essay on Doug Engelbart’s vision of human augmentation, using it as a lens with which to view AI-Assisted coding & various considerations around that.

This includes a dense disquisition on @GeePawHill’s friend Kent Beck’s current augmented process. Can he show us how Engelbart’s Law holds in 2025? I welcome everyone’s constructive comment & reflections.

Last year I kept seeing 'Tidy First?' on https://www.oreilly.com/ and kept meaning to read it. This morning I found a talk version and I’m watching it: https://youtu.be/Saaz6D1azlU

ā€œWhat’s a leader to do, if you can’t ā€œhold them accountableā€? As I said above, be a person. Tell stories. Listen, empathetically but critically. Set an example. Read the room. Create skin-in-the-game situations, not by giving cash (another distorting move) but by making sure, for example, that folks play the game they’re writing or their kids do or their parents do.ā€

@jasongorman

"Do the simplest thing that could possibly work" needs us to define what we mean by "work".

"Working" here being synonymous with "effective"

Wow... this instructor thinks #Refactoring was written by #KentBeck... might explain why his description of refactoring was off -- I'm sceptical he actually read it.

The marketing of XP is very deliberate and conscious. Part of it is in co-opting the power of the media; I make sure I'm newsworthy from time to time. Part is in co-opting some of my publisher's ad budget.... #KentBeck #citations https://openquotes.github.io/authors/kent-beck-quotes/#10e91182
