The Academy by Kent Monkman, 2008 (acrylic on canvas)

Five idealized European men are depicted at the center, struggling with serpents, echoing the classical sculpture "Laocoön and His Sons". The artist, Kent Monkman's, gender-fluid alter ego, Miss Chief Eagle Testickle, often appears in his works, including this one, to subvert colonial narratives. The scene takes place within a setting that blends elements of an Indigenous lodge with a classical academy, addressing themes of colonization, sexuality, and the complexities of historical and contemporary Indigenous experiences. The painting draws on and subverts conventions of history painting, a genre traditionally used for large-scale works with historical, mythological, or biblical subjects.

Miss America (part 1 of the Four Continents series) by Kent Monkman, 2012 (acrylic on canvas)

Inspired by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo's ceiling cycle The Four Continents, specifically the fresco titled Apollo and the Four Continents, painted in the mid-18th century. Monkman reimagined Tiepolo's work to critique Euro-Western history and colonialism by recasting the allegorical figures into a Canadian Indigenous context.

This is what Orange Shirt Day is about. And today, the residential school system lives on in a different form. Indigenous children are still stolen from their families and raised in group homes where they are abused and then, when they age out of the system, many end up on the streets with no supports. The 60s scoop did not end. The racism is systemic. aci-iac.ca/art-books/kent-monk #KentMonkman #TheScream #TruthAndReconciliation #ResidentialSchool #IndigenousMastodon #OrangeShirtDay

Humbling to know that my writing does the power of Kent's paintings justice, "Wall text throughout the show written in Miss Chief’s...voice by (Gisele) Gordon concisely presents a straightforward narrative challenging the dominant Western perspective of history absent any pretentiousness or impenetrable academic language. Complexity made simple"
