The correspondence of JLPT results to CEFR levels has been decided, and I guess it's somewhat accurate, but also somewhat strange :neofox_think:
I wonder if they're considering shifting the levels to match CEFR and adding a C2 level. (And, while they're at it, they should also add writing and speaking sections, at least for the highest levels)

Japanese restaurant chain installs tip boxes in response to foreign tourists leaving tips; sparks debate - Japan Today

TIL that 探す and 捜す both read さがす and both mean "to search", but 探すmeans searching for something you want, and 捜す means searching for something you lost. 🤯

I'm at that point in learning Hiragana where I can sound out most of the characters on my own now, but I'm very slow at it and often need to check to be sure, and I still don't know what most of the words mean yet :neofox_glasses:

Reminds me of that time in way-back-when when I was first learning English and having to sound out "big" words, still not knowing what they mean or if I pronounced them correctly, lol

Also my roommate has gotten tired of me pausing our anime to excitedly sound out any Hiragana I see on screen, even tho I still don't understand most of it yet :neofox_laugh_sweat:

Oh no wait, further update to the mental maps: I figured out how to visualize the 犬 character as a chihuahua... just make it Gidget, the Taco Bell dog, who wore a Taco-Marxist beret in those 90s commercials.

If you are not of the age or nationality to remember these, just imagine a Chihuahua in a beret saying "yo quiero taco bell" or "viva gorditas" in an incongruously deep voice. Do not ask yourself what a gordita even is, it does not matter, like life.

Attention Everyone using the system to memorize , the hieroglyphics of the mysterious east:

While Dr. Heisig has taught that the character 大 ("large") should be visualized as a Saint Bernard and the character 犬 ("dog") should be visualized as a chihuahua, since I can never remember that, I propose the following associations instead:

大 is now a giant, fluffy golden retriever.
犬 is now a little corgi wearing a beret (the drop)

please adjust your mental maps.

I'm trying to make myself look up words in a monolingual dictionary (for elementary school students) first, but it often ends up like this:

とうもろこし n
A plant in the Ine family. In the ??? there are fruits with yellow or other seeds arranged ???. The fruits are a foodstuff. Also known as ???.
Kanji: ball/gem-???-???

I learnt the term 親展 (confidential, as in "confidential document") on WaniKani the other day, and today was the first time I could use it in an email to a colleague in our Tokyo office. 😅

I never thought the kanji numerals could be confusing, until I saw the 10s and 1s columns. Or are those plus and minus columns? :neofox_think_googly:

And don’t get me started on chucking in speaking exercises and expecting you to be at a Section 4 level when you’ve never even said “konnichiwa” before… 😣

I really wish this course would teach you more on how to structure a sentence. 😒

These exercises are frequently enraging. 🤐

I received notice that the JLPT scores are coming out on this Friday (Thursday for those who took the exam on the west coast). Nevertheless, I will keep trying, double down with immersion, and start studying for the exam probably a few months earlier.

But listening is probably going to need more work than anything else.

From last weeks episode of Chiko-chan will scold you, if you are learning Japanese, you might be wondering why Furigana is also referred to as "ruby/ルビー”

It was gained from a Japanese person studying the printing press.

“Ruby” refers to the size of the font, which is at 5.25 mm. Since Furigana is shown as a size of a gem. The term itself is derived from religious books as they are named after jewels with the size of the letters used in the book. 7 refers to Ruby, which is the same size font used at 5.25 pt. They also compared the other sizes referred to as Emerald (6 pt) and Diamond (4.5 pt).

Furigana is basically Ruby text used as a reading guide. Of course with the use of Furigana, it improved reading literacy in Japan. Of course, songs will use a different reading although the Kanji means something different. Furigana is used in this case.
