#learningJapanese I use an #Anki deck for vocabulary and noticed that I seem to learn words more quickly if I encounter them somewhere else than if the program randomly feeds me one.
So I set Anki's words per day to "0" and instead manually activate words whenever I read them in a manga and have to look them up. I think that's going to work better?
I’ve accidentally trained the dog to not go for her food until you boop her nose and say “itadakimasu”.
My wife’s fed her a couple times this week and only done the nose boop. Didn’t budge.
We’ve got a note on the kitchen dry-erase board now 😅
Does anyone know where I could get "Glass Heart" (J-Drama)'s japanese subtitles ? I've tried opensubtitles but there's nothing and typing directly "glass heart japanese subtitles" only gives me VOSTEN versions...
What should I type to find japanese subtitles ? Do you know a website for japanese subtitles ?
Thanks 🙏

Why Japanese is far easier to learn than English, with one ‘notable’ exception

are Japanese people online writing プンオー instead of オープン now?
(writing “open” (as in a store’s grand opening) with the syallables reversed, like “peno”.)
if i don’t stay on top of this, the language is gonna turn into cockney rhyming slang while i’m not looking.
Simply put, kenjōgo means that the speaker talks about **what they are doing for the person of higher status**. In doing so, they place the person of higher status at the center of attention and take a back seat themselves.
That's why #keigo is important!
Shortened katakana words in Japanese are just the worst (but kind of fun, once you know them).
I came across スクショ today... So I think "sukusho", what on earth could that be? Turns out it's short for スクリーンショット (sukuriinoshotto, screen shot). 🤪
Keigo sucks — but thinking about Keigo will melt your brain 🧠🔥
Here’s my take on the Japanese honorific system:
👉 Teineigo & Teichougo → show politeness to the person you're talking to.
🗣️ Kenjougo & Sonkeigo → show politeness to the person you're talking about.
🙇 Teichougo & Kenjougo both express modesty — that’s why they’ve often been lumped together (and still are).
Found my near 20-year-old Japanese language textbook in a box the other day. Going to dive into it cold to see what the Green Owl has managed to teach me since.
“Free CD” dontcha-know!
Why do grammar books for Japanese as a second language completly ignore 自発 (spontaneity)?
Damn Duo.
You think you know a kanji, and suddenly you get hit with a reading you haven't come across before :neofox_book_owo:
This time it's 合 in 合戦
Am very very new to Japanese but I hit the dictionary and tried my best to translate and analyse the chorus of OP 1 from Frieren: Beyond Journey's End:
Frieren's ED1 is so cool (translating and analysing the chorus) – @readingchameleon on Tumblr

In short: it's very interesting and the English translation you see on jp/rom/eng videos absolutely does not do it justice AT ALL. Japanese, as I an beginning to realise, is a language that both lives and breathes context, which means with a show like Frieren there are SO MANY LINKS all over the place.
To keep single source of truth I'm linking to over there since the post editor here on さくらじま is very small and inflexible (would love a side by side editor/preview!).
