#LogBurner

Read this warning if you have a #LogBurner:

Our chimney has a #cowl encased in wire mesh to keep out hornets and small birds. Amazingly, the wire mesh has burnt away, and now birds keep flying into the #flue, from which they can't escape. We obviously can't leave it like that, but the cheapest quote we've had so far is £660. Apparently, you can't legally fix it without the right certification, and where there's a certification scheme, prices go — well, through the roof.

I'm guessing this happened over Christmas, when we had elderly relatives round and I kept on burning wood all day. The flue liner will have had time to get seriously hot. From now on, I won't burn more than two consecutive loads of wood. If anyone has a better idea, I'd love to hear it.

Yes, if they're badly used. But (unlike an open fire) burning only dry wood and running a #LogBurner hot enough should burn up the smoke and cause secondary oxidation, converting the CO into CO2 (which is still bad, but not as bad).

With outdoor air, I think the worst problems arise when people burn damp wood and/or let the wood smoulder, both of which will release smoke particles and CO into the air. Burning painted or treated wood is also a no-no, because it produces dioxins, which are both carcinogenic and very stable in the body (so they have decades to do their work). I burn only dry, untreated wood (below 15% humidity) and don't let it smoulder.

The worst problems with indoor air arise when people open the log burner while wood is still burning, either because it's not burning well enough or because they want to refuel. To avoid indoor pollution, I always start the fire in a configuration that'll burn without needing to be stoked or rearranged, and I don't refuel until there's no visible flame in the burner. Opening the door half an inch and waiting a couple of seconds before opening it more widely will also help to prevent combustion products from entering the room.

Candles with wooden wicks? TIL.

Dynomight mentions #candles and air quality, suggesting that the most important thing is to extinguish them with an airtight lid rather than blowing them out:

dynomight.net/air/

I bought an #AirQuality meter myself, partly because we have a log burner. I found two interesting things:

  • Running a #LogBurner properly has no effect on indoor air quality;

  • Roasting meat in an electric oven produces concentrations of hundreds of μg/m³ PM2.5, and grilling meat under an electric grill sends them even higher. With gas, presumably, it would be even worse.

What I don't know (but would be interested to learn) is whether #particulates from cooking are as harmful to health as particulates from fuel combustion (candles, firewood, gas, petrol, diesel).

This is flippin ridiculous, yesterday's was warm enough to cut the lawns wearing nothing more than a bikini top and shorts, today I've had to resort to lighting the as three layers of clothing weren't enough to keep me comfortably warm.

Log burner contains a roaring fire. Fireplace built of ornamental brick with green oak mantle. On the mantle are five led candles, two in fancy candle lamps.
On the chimney breast above hangs a watercolour painting of 'Star Gazing Lilies' in a blue glass vase.

Outside is cold and overcast. However there is comfort and warmth by the log burner, and the stock eater is content with the ball she found in the forest this morning… #relaxation #dog #home #logburner

New log burner in the lounge. No more draughty open fireplace.

Committed the cardinal sin of log burning. Used up all the indoor / fireplace wood last night, which ended at 04:00am. Mind, it was our longest continuous burn since it was installed, and I didn't replenish piles/basket on Xtmas Eve as planned cos poorly.

Now trying to get it going with cold, and externally/superficially, damp wood.

This could take a while.

Ongoing debate in my house. I can get the #logburner going in five minutes and then stack it so I only have to return to it about every 30 minutes. It takes hubby a good 20 minutes and he returns to it every 15 or so. But apparent I do it all wrong and he hates the way I do fires. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’ve gone all instagram and done a little simmerpot

A wooden board on a kitchen counter with pine needles and cones, sliced orange, star anise, a cinnamon stick and cloves arranged on it. Some fairy lights hang in front of the tiles in the background.A grey pot sits on top of a lit wood burner; the sooty windows show the orange glow of the fire withinSlices of orange, spices and pine cones are seen inside the pot from above.
