Should update that I posted this and then took the dogs out for our evening walk.
After I got back, I then realized that the connection had been restored.
No one from #metronet reached out (which they'd promised), but they did manage to get it restored before the end of the weekend.
At this point, it looks like our fiber Internet (which went out Thursday night) is going to be out all weekend. And, since T-Mobile took over, this is the 3rd extended outage we've had.
Overall, I'd been pretty happy with them, but that's taken a serious decline in 2025.
(This is a draft gripe, which I'll probably also put somewhere more public where flagging #Metronet might do something; I don't seriously expect they're watching Masto)
I just switched from #Comcast to #Metronet. Fiber instead of coax. Still 1G down, but now symmetric. One third the price. And the people are all nice. Of course Comcast didnโt want me to go! I couldnโt cancel through customer service, I had to speak to a "retention specialist". She tried to get me to stay by offering exactly what Metronet is giving me for exactly the same price, but adding in a mobile line (why would I need that?)
I was kind, but I pretty much ended the discussion with this: if you give me twice the bandwidth, symmetric, at half the cost of Metronet, Iโll consider whether that makes it worth putting up with your poor reliability and customer service.
They had their monopoly, and now they donโt.
Got #Fiber installed. Still have #Comcast until Iโm sure of everything. #Metronet Is my new provider. Everyone there great so far. Installation: A1. One hiccup: they are Carrier Grade NAT. That means I donโt get to control anything on the ONT (the fiber equivalent to a cable modem). Therefore, no port forwarding. Therefore, I canโt just SSH in like Iโve been doing. Just learned about other options from @jammcq research for our latest episode of @RuntimeArguments all about VPNs (and related). Installing Tailscale on my Mac was nothing. Maybe three minutes total. Tried at least three different ways to get it running on my 24.04 Kubuntu system but I still donโt have it. Jim said it was easy for him but the two of us couldnโt find any meaningful difference between our two systems. Iโll try more tonight maybe.
Plenty of modern reasons to hate this geography, but the old ones remain....
lightning strike yesterday at 5p killed:
- the mesh router hub (old eero now pressed into temporary service),
- the fiber modem (fixed this morning: shoutout #Metronet tech support),
- the Tablo (a TiVo-like, not worth replacing?!), and
- the garage door machinery ($$$fudge$$$).
It also blew two fuses (main bedroom, "general lighting") and the GFI circuit for the outdoor plugs won't reset.
Next Monday: big day for the trades. ๐ธ

Self hosting is great until your internet goes down. Finally back online after a garbage truck took out the fiber line that runs across the street. Again. They say they ran it higher this time. What a great idea! Nice going, #Metronet.
Overall, the Metronet fiber pricing feels dishonest to me. I wonder how many people sign up for this without reading the fine print. Below is the pricing for my location, which includes 3 scheduled price increases over the next 3 years.

On this day in 2017, I visited Whiteman Park in Perth.
Whiteman Park is home to the Bennett Brook Railway and Perth Electric Tramway Society, as well as two transport museums.
Ironically, for such a transport themed park, the only way to visit is by car. This is set to change with the park's tram line being extended to the new Whiteman Park railway station on the Ellenbrook suburban railway line (currently under construction). Both the tram extension and the Ellenbrook line are expected to open in December 2024.
Oh neat #MetroNet has already rolled out the broadband nutrition label thing.
Cyclepath closed for Metronet means you have to use the footpath outside a school, which is partially blocked by roadworks sign. Traffic island a metre away would've been better spot for sign. Going back to my post a couple of days ago wondering if fiber was coming to my neighborhood, it looks like that is, in fact, true. I got their card in the mail yesterday.
I'd never heard of #metronet before. Anyone here use them? What has your experience been like?
Their pricing seemed good at first glance. $60 for 1Gb and opposed to the $60 I'm paying now for 100Mb. But looking closer it's that price for only the first 12 months, then goes up to $85 for months 13-24, then goes up again to $95 for months 25+. That kind of put a damper on my excitement.
Having issues with our #Metronet modem and the tech canโt come out until *Thursday*. ๐
