"The precise issue tomorrow might seem obscure: whether to repeal section 40 of the Crime and Courts Act of 2013 – a piece of legislation which, thanks to the unscrupulous blocking tactics of the Conservatives, has never been allowed to enter into force.

Section 40 is the key to making the Leveson reforms of press regulation work. It was designed to make possible independent, effective press accountability".

"Labour policy has been pro-Leveson – a position that goes back beyond the Jeremy Corbyn years to ..Ed Miliband.. But it is also a policy feared and hated by the big national newspaper groups.
In recent months, all the body language of the Starmer leadership has suggested it is now ready to appease the billionaire owners of the Mail, The Sun, The Times and the Telegraph.. in the short-term hope that they will give it a softer ride in election coverage"

I doubt whether most people would realise we need legislation in the UK to compel on demand streaming services to provide subtitles and signing for programmes…but we do and there has been some progress this week! Yay!

In its plans to repeal Section 40, this government is discarding the last shred of its predecessors' commitments to honour the findings of #Leveson.
Hacked Off encourage you to write to your MP in protest of this draconian move.

As currently worded, the #MediaBill poses significant threats to the sustainability of local and community radio, especially those stations which cater to underserved minority groups. Better Media member Dr Rob Watson outlines some very serious concerns in this useful summary.

In this episode, I outline some thoughts about the and the danger that it will lead to a homogenisation and centralisation of radio, I also cover the @dcms consultation on the future of analogue community radio, and note that social gain should be the primary concern for

Here are some notes about the . Will it be the End of Local Radio in the UK? Consolidation. Monopolisation. Concentration. Homogenisation! We need more market diversity in independent and community radio. This bill won't provide it!

The government claimed this week that its #MediaBill will 'protect public interest journalism'. A smokescreen as usual - the Media Reform Coalition have the lowdown.

@michael_robinson Yes, well that's effectively coming back in with the Online Safety regime (that's the same regime that repeals the DEA) - that doesn't deal with the problem of enforcement of the criminal law though. I guess if we are thinking about this area we should also think about the changes proposed in the draft #MediaBill (gov.uk/government/publications). That proposes to deal with the jurisdictional limits that were the reason the original VOD rules didn't aply to overseas porn providers.
